NHL 2008-09 Season

What's the record for largest point-diffential between a division's first and second place team?

The Bruins have a 21-point division lead- 21! That is staggering!

I'm not sure what the number is, but I know that the Canadiens had a much bigger differential than that when they played in the Norris Division.

That division was such a joke.

It was the Canadiens and 4 midgets, with the Habs clinching the division practically by Thanksgiving.

I just looked up the 1977-78 season.

The Canadiens won the division by- ready for this- 49 points over the second place Kings!

The Canadiens record that year was 60-8-12!!!!!

Here's the Norris Division standings that season:

1. Montreal.....................132 points
2. Los Angeles.................83 points
3. Pittsburgh...................81 points
4. Washington................62 points
5. Detroit........................41 points

Were the Habs that good, or were they the product of a laughably bad division?

They were THAT good.

Best team, BY FAR, that I have ever seen.

Don't forget, the rest of the NHL had some very solid teams in the late '70's.

The Islanders, Bruins, Sabres and Flyers were all very good to great teams. They were just not good enough to stand up to the juggernaut that was the Montreal Canadiens.

Of course, the Islanders took over in the early '80's, but that team couldn't hold a candle to those late '70's Habs teams.

San Jose has a 30 point lead over the next team in thier division this year.
(Anaheim)

Detroit is 18 ahead of Chicago this year.

So 21 points is not that big a deal really.

How about these Ducks? Just when I had them cooked and done they turn around and win three in a row and are now just a point out of 8th place in the West. They could still very well make the playoffs.

We don't talk about that decade here in Detroit. The "darkness with Harkness" years.:(

Flyers real balanced win against the Devils tonight 4-2 :D

Very cool In-house video for the Canes/Panthers game with Florida radio on NHL Center Ice. Thanks to Versus for lifting the exclusive blackout.
