The official rule book contains at Rule 12, Section 2, Article 13(8) a phrase that possibly creates a loophole for a helmet-to-helmet hit. If the quarterback is “attempting to advance the ball as a runner,” all protections for the passer apparently go away.

Harrison’s hit on McCoy could fall into gray area of rulebook | ProFootballTalk

Go ahead you guys were saying?

I've already posted the rules directly from NFL. If you chose not to read or understand them, well, there's nothing I can do to change that. Have a lovely weekend. I'm out.

That hit has NOTHING to do with DEFENSELESS players.

I'll repeat myself for your sake....

Harrison easily could have lowered his helmet and just CREAMED McCoy with a good chest tackle. Easily. He chose to launch himself leading with his helmet INTO McCoy's head.

THAT is very dangerous and illegal.

End of story.

It doesn't matter if it's RB, QB, or WR carrying the ball. You cannot do that.

NOT when you purposefully LAUNCH YOURSELF into ANY other players head/helmet LEADING WITH YOUR HELMET.

From the pdf and already pointed out to you

(g) If a player uses any part of his helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/”hairline” parts) or
facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily.

Does not matter if defenseless player or not. You are not allowed to use your helmet as a weapon and yes that includes hitting another player in the head (helmet to helmet)

What did the NFL rule?

Sandra
legal

from an article

Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison’s helmet-to-helmet hit on Cleveland Browns Joshua Cribbs was perfectly legal, and the league did not fine Harrison for that. Cribbs was classified as a runner on that play, so a helmet-to-helmet hit was legal.

see when you are classified as a runner, which I am saying MCcoy is, then Helmet to Helmets are legal in some instances...

Why do you keep deflecting from the hit on McCoy? That is what we are discussing.
Im not at all....you guys said ALL helmet to helmet hits are illegal, which isnt the case....I have said many times that a runner is allowed to be hit helmet to helmet which is the case here..where have I deflected?

Was it ruled legal, or just wrapped up in the 75k fine he got for hitting Massaquoi in the same game?

He didn't even put his hands out in front of him there either to make a tackle. He just ran headfirst in Cribbs. THAT is not how you play football. THAT is how you get called a dirty player.

The guy just tries to take out other players.

I remember in a preseason game when he went after Kyle Orton like that, and Kyle was going down. Harrison came in a speared him headfirst. For what purpose????

It was ruled legal, clean play by the NFL.

Well this 'guy' did not say that at all. I said there can be incidental contact (remember what I said about pad level?), but this hit does not qualify as incidental contact.

Sandra

Once again, you keep trying to prove that he wasn't a defenseless player, which I agree with...and I think the other people agree with too.

I'm saying that he's protected from that kind of helmet to helmet attack at all times...defenseless or not.

Sandra
sure ya did. :)
