NHL 2008-09 Season

Great story tonight.

A year ago today, Richard Zednik suffered a life-threatening injury when he got slashed in the neck by a skate a year ago tonight in Buffalo (frightening when you remember what happened to Clint Malarchuk).

Tonight, he scored the game-tying goal AND the game-winning goal- in OVERTIME, no less!

I don't watch hockey that much as I use to in the 90s, but I wanted to wathc the Panthers last night and man what a treat that was. For all the bad news flowing down here with A-Rod and the likes...this was great story that not even Hollywood to write!

"it helps when players will take less to stay with a team"

Or take less to come to a team think Hossa.
From reports from HNIC Hot Stove and the Detroit TV broadcast that Hossa wants to come back next year.
Now there must be some reason for this attitude because so far all the players who signed for more years in Detroit have taken less than they could have gotten on the free agent market.
So all you who put down Detroit it is not luck that Detroit stays good it Kenny H and the supporting cast that he has who help him come up with deals not to mention the owners who must be among the best in all the pro leagues.

And here is an example of what the Wings do to attract and keep players:

Cause for a pause: Retired Wings now are ring bearers
Ted Kulfan / The Detroit News

?Alex Delvecchio and a lot of former Red Wings finally have Stanley Cup rings.

?Wings owners Mike and Marian Ilitch sent living Red Wings, who won Stanley Cups with the organization before the 1997 Wings' championship team, a version of the 2008 championship ring to honor the players' contribution to the organization.

?"You'd have to be a weightlifter to wear this thing," said Delvecchio, who won three Stanley Cups in the 1950s with the Wings.

?General manager Ken Holland estimates as many as 30 retired Wings received the rings. Holland said this was strictly an idea of the Ilitches.

? "In respect to the tradition of the Red Wings, and what these players contributed," Holland said. "Players in that era didn't receive rings. Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch felt this would be a way to honor these players for what the players accomplished."

?The ring the retired players received has the player's name on one side, and an amount of diamonds reflecting how many Stanley Cups the player won with the Wings on an opposite side.

?The former Wings players received their rings last week.

?"It speaks to the ownership here, and the tradition of an Original Six team," Holland said.

They also gave rings to their broadcasters.

THIS is the year of the Sharks.

They're no longer relying on Thornton, Marleau, and Nabokov to carry the load.

They have DEPTH, which is what separates them from Detroit.

Oh, and it is well-known that since 2003, no defending Stanley Cup Champion has made it out of the first-round.

You're kidding right? We got guys in the minors that are good enough to start for the rest of the NHL, that can't crack the lineup here. I was telling my wife last night, that on every team I follow there is at least a couple of players on the team that I wonder how they're even in the league, (except for the Lions, who have only 14 players that even deserve to be in the NFL) let alone on our roster. Can't name ONE on the Wing's roster. Think about how many teams in any sport you can say that about. Our fourth line is better than a lot of teams first line. Just an opinion, but very close to be being a fact.

And do you know what really speaks volumes, Paul? I have listened to both the Ducks and Kings TV and radio booth teams call games against your Wings for years now. It is astonishing to hear them game after game, season after season just heap nothing but praise on that organization from the top down and always comment on how THAT is how to run a professional sports team.

When you continually receive praise from the enemy, that says it all!;)

I got to tell you - If you told me 17 years ago that the Wings would make the playoffs every year from there on, I would have laughed. I've enjoyed every bit of this success. I guess the Lions are Karma's payback on Detroit. You really can't have it all. It all starts with ownership that has a clear vision of how things should be done, and hires the right people to follow that plan. Thank you Mr. Illitch.

That's why you die-hard Red Wings fans have to understand why we
whoop and holler and carry on when we actually get to BEAT you in a game. It means a helluva lot to us and to our individual teams.

I understand that completely. We in Detroit felt that way when the Tigers beat the Yankees in the playoffs in 2006. We were satisfied with that. Going to the Series was just icing on the cake. I feel honored that we are the "measuring stick", instead of that "stick in the mud" that the Lions are.

Everything that has been said above about the Wings organization is so true. I see it starting every September when the Training Camps open with new/traded players first, and then the veterans come in. The red carpet is rolled out by both the Wings management and also the town to give the season a great kickoff.

An example....last year I remember one of coaches telling me to "keep my eye on Conklin, we are going to see a top rate goalie".....

It's ALWAYS THE SHARK'S YEAR.
We hear the same thing EVERY year.

Nope.

Last year, all I heard about was Detroit.

The year before, Anaheim.

San Jose was regarded as A favorite, not THE favorite.

They've never had a bullseye on their back like the Wings do.

"To be the champion, you have to BEAT the champion".

I can see the Hawks take Detoilet more than San Jose. It will likely be either Chicago or San Jose playing the Wings in the semi's. If Dallas plays De-twat in the 1st round I think they may never survive to the 2nd round.

The playoffs are gonna be fun as hell baby! Just hearing Pat Foley in the playoffs is gonna be a huge treat, back in the old days when I was in grade school and Sportschannel America was using the Hawk Vision PPV telecasts.

Paul, I really like the way the Wings are playing and I have a feeling they are going to peak going into the playoffs. We shall see.

On a side note, I am really surprised to see Dallas stuck in mediocrity this year. I thought they were the solid #3 team out of the West.

Typical Philly fan.
Love the disrespect, keep it up ....

Philly fan doesn't know how to spell.
'
Detoilet, De-twat ....

Nice

Maybe SOME day your team will be classy enough to be able to play the Wings in a series that means something .....

Never mind, it won't happen any time soon.

What's a matter? You're hockey team (insert name here) can't catch Detriot?

They definitely need to tighten up the defense and the power play killing on the road leaves a lot to be desired. On the other hand, they sure are finding the net a lot on the offensive side. Datsyuk may be having his finest season yet. Hossa called him the best all-around player in the league. See the article in Freep.com
