NFL 2008-09 Season

"Daze of our Lions" (My apologies to soap fans)

I see some of you are still doubting the Lions ineptitude. How can this be? Yesterday they wrestled defeat from the jaws of victory, proving once again what I've been saying all along about this team - No matter how they play, or how the opposition plays, this team will find a way to lose. Some weeks just take a little more creativity, or help from the officiating. I watched them do something I don't think I've seen since the beginning of the Millen error, and that was score on 4 consecutive drives. Unfortunately, those were the only drives they scored on, and it wasn't enough. One quarter of great football all game. (Hell, all season.)

I have another theory about them also, well actually it's about the opposition. I believe that teams play down to us for portions of games. I saw it happen against Green Bay, and I saw it again yesterday. Teams rack up an early lead, and then they coast. They let the Lions back into the game, but when they realize what's happening, they turn on the afterburners and finish us off. Kind of like playing with the smaller kids when you were younger. Lay off a little, let them have some fun, and then pummel them when they get a little uppity. Like watching a cat play with a mouse.

At any rate, at least they're not quitting, (Oakland is sure looking like a team that has quit) and they still may win 2 games. Minnesota and an undefeated Tennessee team on Thanksgiving, the likely culprits.

I'm surprised that nobody has said anything about them picking up Daunte Hotpepper. (Blackpepper, Sweetpepper, Chilipepper, Culpepper, what's the difference?) I'm curious as to what you guys make of that? You'll have to look back some posts to find my comments on that matter.

Stay tuned for the next episode of "Daze of our Lions"!

LMAO!!!! :haha:haha Paul, you are TOO funny!! :D

Seriously, when Orton got hurt and Turnoversaurus Rex came in for the Bears..........I thought the Lions had a "W"

For the record, I have the Lions beating Tampa and Minnesota.

Speaking of Detroit and Minnesota,
'
Paul says how Detroit hasn't won in Minnesota in his lifetime.

Anyone remember when the Lions won a game in the Metrodome?

You know what? So did we! One stinking FG was all we needed somewhere to demoralize them. BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (My apologies to Belushi).

I did a bit of research, and I found out that the Lions once had a seven-game winning streak in 1995, a 10-win season, a QB with 30 TD passes, and two great wide recievers.

One of those wins was a 44-38 Thanksgiving shootout against the Vikings in 1995.

Paul, contrary to what you think, the Lions have won some games on Turkey Day- remember the 1997 thrashing of the Bears, 1989 over HD's Browns, 1990 in a thriller with Denver, AND when they beat my Bills in 1994?

What irony- the one time the Bills played on Turkey day and it comes foru months AFTER my family leaves Buffalo!

Not taking anything away from Herman Moore or Brett Perriman, BUT that Lions team was all about barry Sanders.

Sanders, IMO, was one of the greatest and classiest superstars I have ever seen..........in ANY sport! :up

I never said that they haven't won on Thanksgiving, it just feels like a long, long time ago.

I'm also picking them to win this year. Providing Tennessee is still undefeated, I can see them overlooking the sad sack Lions for a turkey dinner and the playoffs. Both of which will be "in hand" at that point. Besides the Lions always win one game that nobody in their right mind would pick them in.

Sabres,
I know you said you were going to start a Thanksgiving football thread (that will be fun :up), but the Lions/Turkey Day game I remember the most was Bears-Lions in 1980.

It's still to this day, the only game I ever saw that ENDED on a kickoff return for a touchdown.

If Detroit and Tennessee remain winless and unbeaten, THAT would make for a great storyline!

Will either team spoil what would be a unique battle?

I thought you'd go with New England's 2002 win, given your NFL loyalties.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add:

"And then there was one!"

Congratulations to my fellow companion in misery Brainfry. Now I'm all alone in my misery, and you know how misery loves company. Definitely a tough sports year around here.

Loved the guy, but couldn't stand it when my Bills couldn't stop him (The Lions OWNED Buffalo in the 1990s).

The greatest RB in Bills history, Thurman Thomas, was only half the player Barry was

It wasn't a memorable game though.

One could argue that the 2000 Pats-Lions Turkey Day game (which the Lions won in a rout) was more memorable/meaningful. Why, you ask?

A fourth string quarterback by the name of Tom Brady was put into the game in the fourth quarter. Belichick later admitted it was the first time he was impressed with Brady.

Who knows, if the Lions don't blowout the Pats on that Turkey Day, Brady might have got cut and we would have been stuck with the Michael Bishop era in New England!

You got a good point. I thought of the idea of your boys in the old-school unis.

I'd talk about my Turkey Day football memories, but it's too early. I'll wait until two/three days until Thanksgiving.
