NCAA Basketball 2008-09 Season

Tubby called that timeout at the end too soon, negating a 3 that tied it up. Should've let his boys play.

I saw that...When they drew up the play after the time out, I knew there would be no three at the end, right after that last play/timeout:)

LSU losing to Auburn at the half 34-28. Getting beat on the boards again. If they don't figure out how to stop that, it'll be a short tourny season. :(

Maryland beating Virginia by six with about 6 minutes left.

A Terps loss will destroy any at-large hopes they had.

Kansas wins another Big 12 conference title.

This is remarkable, given what they lost from last year.

I have to ask: is Bill Self that good a coach, or is the Big 12 that bad?

Bill, remember when you had that picture of Michael Meyers to describe the Red Sox' never-say-day attitude in the playoffs?

I think the Kansas Jayhawks can also fit this picture.

Self is that good. The top half of the Big XII is pretty good. Self's been one of the top coaches in the country for a while. He's taken 3 different teams to the elite 8 this decade. I always thought people gave him a hard time after Kansas flamed out of the tournament a couple of times. Now that they won the NC last year and have come back strong this year people are opening their eyes.

The Washington Post ran a really comprehensive three part anaylsis of Maryland's plight under Gary Williams which can be summarized as: you have to cheat to win but Williams won't cheat. He lost his prize recruit because he wouldn't hire the kids trainer as an assistant coach.

I have sympathy for the kids. Over 95% of them will never play in the NBA and are at the peak of their earning potential, so they can earh hundreds of millions or even billions for 300+ division 1 programs, but they can't afford to buy the jerseys in the campus stores that bear their name and number. I don't have a solution for all this, but they're entitled to more than a fake degree given o players who have to spend 30 to 40 hours a week working on their job of playing basketball.

It's not that cut and dry. Not all coaches who have good players are cheaters. Gary is just a lazy recruiter who'd rather get guys you'd find playing at the Y somewhere. There are seedy sides to college recruiting, but the bottom line is that if Gary wanted better players he could get them easy enough without having to cheat. He's just a whiner cause they're headed back to the NIT...again.

And BTW, Mr Integrity also has the worst graduation rate in the ACC and now Maryland is at risking of forfeiting scholarships due to the NCAA's new standards.

I think there's one scenario that the Big East can grab three #1 seeds:

1. Louisville wins the BE Tournament

2. UConn beats Pitt in the semifinals

3. Oklahoma doesn't win the Big 12 Tournament

If ALL those things happens, then it's conceivable that the BE gets three #1 seeds.
