NCAA Basketball 2008-09 Season

Two of the biggest sources of revenue for major colleges are money from TV contracts and donations from fans/alumni. And that money is based 100% on the success of the program. If a team like UConn sucked ESPN wouldn't pay as much for their games and their fans wouldn't give as much money to support the program. These guys may make a lot of money, and yes it is Bullsh!t when they get paid millions in buyouts, but the successful coaches earn every nickel of what they get. They are not depriving a school teacher of a paycheck. As a matter of fact big college football and basketball programs bring in so much money that they actually subsidize most of the minor sports at universities. So guys like Jim Calhoun are what makes it possible for the womens tennis coach to even have a job.

I will end it with this. He works for the UCONN which is a STATE SCHOOL. He makes more money with his contract than the Gov. Jodi Rell...by almost 10 times. The state, like most, in some serious financial problems to the tune of almost 1 billion dollars in the hole. Why can't should he give some money back, furloughs like other schools are doing?? I mean with his endorsement deals, which have nothing to do with the state...who cares....??!! I mean we make this major issue of professional athletes make all this money and no one seems to make an issue about coaches....especially in colleges where some of these kids come from sh!tty situations where they cannot even work to have a little extra money.....I mean by not making an issue of coaches and their....are you basically saying they work harder or are more justified in the millions they make?!

It's not a question of how hard anyone works. Were Calhoun to give back any money he'd just be sending it up the road to Bristol where ESPN is. It wouldn't help someone who lost their job. People like the governor or other state employees get paid through people's taxes so if times are tough and the state has less money then, yes, they should have to sacrifice. I don't think Calhoun owes ESPN a refund and I don't think he owes the rich supporters of UConn basketball anything either, besides a good team, and Calhoun seems to be holding up his end of the bargain there.

That is why I said they are this year's biggest overachievers.

Crappy conference or not, I thought they'd be a fringe top-20 team, not a top-5 team.

I have to agree with everyone else. They don't deserve to be #1. Why should wins and loses determine who is #1. If that were true in football then one of the non-BCS teams would have been #1.

Speaking of mascots, one of the creepiest mascots in the land had something to be proud of last night........

Did you even read the quote I posted earlier and the supporting link?? If not, I'll post it again:

All UConn coaches’ compensation comes solely from Athletic Department revenues.
It's not hard to understand, this means he and the other coaches are paid from revenues they generate, no tax dollars are involved. Even if he made a token gesture to give back some of his salary, it wouldn't go back into the state coffers, they would probably just buy some more weight equipment or something...

This entire argument is pointless really. Until Obama and his Congress turn this country into a complete socialist state, no one should have to give any money back to anyone (especially those who actually work for it), regardless of what some koolaid drinking activist says. But if or when this happens, you can bet your ass one thing will not happen...money coming back out of the coffers of anyone in Washington. They don't even pay their taxes. ;)

Looks like my Tigers just earned a share of the overall SEC title! Trent Johnson has done one hell of a job his first year, weaker conference or not. :up :)

Bzzzz. Wrong. Our very own Ohio State Governor, Ted Strickland is taking a 6 percent pay cut this year. This is justified because the majority of his income is generated by our taxes.

However, the opposite is true for College employees, namely the coaches we're talking about. Very little to no tax money goes to their salary.

I didn't realize Strickland rated so high as to live in Washington.

You missed the sarcasm I guess. That was my point, it won't happen. Calhoun and the rest of those who are successful in sports have the right to tell people like Kreyeske to shut up when he asks his controversial questions, and some of us can "kiss his ass" for doing it. Now back to bball. ;)

Who's the next #1 to go down before tounament season? I say UNC.

Probably UConn, I hate to say it.

UNC's finish: G tech, @V Tech, Dook. Meh.

UConn's finish: @Marquette, Notre Dame, @ Pitt. Yikes.

No doubt you guys have the tougher schedule and besides Carolina just lost a game they shouldn't have. I'd be shocked if they drop another one.

Word of caution, anders- VaTech beat the Heels a few years back in Blacksburg.

After what happened against the Terps- BE CAREFUL!
I know all about that, but I'm going to write off the Maryland fiasco as a hiccup and nothing else so I figure we'll be ready for everyone else.

I'm not writing off the Maryland fiasco. It was another case of our poor defense letting us down. It almost cost us against Miami. We had a 14 point lead against them and it got down to one. UNC doesn't play championship caliber defense. We don't need Pittsburgh level defense but it needs to be better than what it is now. We really miss Marcus Ginyard. He could've slowed down Vasquez.

I can't argue with all that, but remember somebody has to win the NC. No team is perfect. UConn is shorthanded without Dyson, Blake Griffin is concussed for Oklahoma, and Pitt just lost to Providence. As for the others I'm not a believer in Memphis, dook sucks and Wake can't win on the road. If Carolina can keep it together they are still the best team out there.

Congrats to Jim Calhoun on win # 800. To think that anyone would question how much he makes.

Tough break for Marquette losing Dominic James to a broken foot.

There was a bit of a questionable non-foul call at the end of VaTech/Clemson.

Should a foul have been called? (I think so.)
I missed that, but a big win for VT. With the way VT, Maryland and now Providence are playing the ACC and Big East are going to snag a lot of bids. In other words if you're Kentucky or South Carolina it's nervous time. Nobody's going to be impressed with mediocre teams coming from the SEC.
