NCAA Basketball 2008-09 Season

At LSU, Les Miles' contract includes a set base salary, multimedia compensation, athletic and academic incentives, and additional money from the university's athletic foundation. These coaches don't just suck money out of a University sending it into debt like Kreyeske's dumbass is assuming. That's what pissed off Calhoun.
Two of the biggest sources of revenue for major colleges are money from TV contracts and donations from fans/alumni. And that money is based 100% on the success of the program. If a team like UConn sucked ESPN wouldn't pay as much for their games and their fans wouldn't give as much money to support the program. These guys may make a lot of money, and yes it is Bullsh!t when they get paid millions in buyouts, but the successful coaches earn every nickel of what they get. They are not depriving a school teacher of a paycheck. As a matter of fact big college football and basketball programs bring in so much money that they actually subsidize most of the minor sports at universities. So guys like Jim Calhoun are what makes it possible for the womens tennis coach to even have a job.

Well put. :up

DID YOU HEAR the interview??!! Don't make judgement without hearing the interview. He gets 1.2 million FROM the University...and where do you think that money comes from, seeing that it is a state university? LIke I said, I see his guys point when it come to his salary FROM THE UNIVERSITY....he has NO ISSUES with the money he makes from endorsement deals and the like. He probably pulls down twice if not 3 times the amount he gets from the University...if other coaches from other conferences and other sports can make the sacrifice....considering that the university is in dire need of money....why can't he?

Again, listen to the interview COMPLETELY.
First you say it was tax revenue, then you say it was the university budget. As Jim Calhoun said, "“Get some facts and come back and see me. Get some facts.”

All UConn coaches’ compensation comes solely from Athletic Department revenues. These include ticket sales, radio and television broadcast contracts, Big East conference and NCAA income, private fundraising, and corporate partnerships. According to a 2003 Sports Illustrated article this is the case for most coaches, although some receive compensation from university foundations and private, university-affiliated athletic associations.

I know that there would be a lot of sports that wouldn't be played at Michigan, if it weren't for the revenue the football team creates. I'm sure UConn's basketball team provides a similar benefit to their university.

I can't speak for UConn, but there was a study done recently that showed Ohio State University has a $4 Billion economic impact on the state each year! How much of that is directly caused by the school's notable sports program, I can't answer. But I'm pretty damn sure it is one of the main attributing factors. Again.... $4 Billion back into the local economy! Wow!

My Friars are seconds away from pulling off the huge upset against Pitt!!! :)

This should take PC off the bubble (at least for now). :up

Unbelievably, Pittsburgh is about to lose to, get this- PROVIDENCE.

The freaking Friars, in an arena named after a breakfast food, beating Pittsburgh.

This is shocking- hard to fathom.

It just flattened me in shock and surprise, like getting KO'd by Hitman Hearns.

Now, it looks like UConn or UNC will be #1- there is no justice.

Memphis should be #1 by next week if there is any justice.

DAMN YOU, PROVIDENCE! I HOPE YOU BOMB OUT IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT!

Why??

PC is a good team. Not in Pitt's class, but a good team nonetheless.

They had only one good win until tonight- Syracuse.

Two signature wins can't carry enough weight come tournament time.

Also, I think they are a little schizophrenic- they have a head-scratching loss to Northeastern, and a loss to Notre Dame that doesn't sound great.

You shouldn't be shocked; don't you remember your little gem from a few days ago:
No team can win every game or lose every game. EVERYBODY wins or loses.

Memphis should be #1 by next week if there is any justice.
No they shouldn't, unless everyone above them loses again, because of the lousy conference they play in:

Ranking of conferences by average rating of the teams

Code:
 1 Atlantic Coast Conference .8796
 2 Pac 10 Conference .8740
 3 Big East Conference .8681
 4 Big 12 Conference .8519
 5 Big Ten Conference .8461
 6 Southeastern Conference .7821
 7 Mountain West Conference .7618
[B] 8 Conference USA .6887 [/B]
 9 Atlantic 10 Conference .6365
10 Missouri Valley Conference .6259

What? Memphis plays in a JV league. No way they should even be under consideration for #1. Looks like the Tar Heels could get the pole position going into the tournament again. :D

That didn't stop them from ascending there last year.

It's amazing how wins and losses by a team are not as important as playing in a good conference.

This year's Memphis team is nowhere near as good as last year. John Calipari would be the first person to admit that.

That is why I said they are this year's biggest overachievers.

Crappy conference or not, I thought they'd be a fringe top-20 team, not a top-5 team.
