NCAA Basketball 2008-09 Season

I missed that, but a big win for VT. With the way VT, Maryland and now Providence are playing the ACC and Big East are going to snag a lot of bids. In other words if you're Kentucky or South Carolina it's nervous time. Nobody's going to be impressed with mediocre teams coming from the SEC.

Most of the projections I've seen has only 3 at-large bids for the mid-majors (two for Mountain West and one for A-10).

I would be shocked if the Big East/ACC doesn't get AT LEAST 14 out of the remaining 31 at-large bids. That leaves 17 at-large bids for the other four majors.

Of course, upsets in the mid-major tourneys could set that number back.

I think it will be four (barring another Georgia scenario): LSU, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee.

I think ultimately, South Carolina will be on the outside looking in.
Kentucky's looking doubtful. They got smoked by South Carolina tonight.

Just a disgruntled Maryland fan here, but can someone please tell me the last time that DOOK lost a game officiated by Mike " I Love Coach K" Wood. This guy is an absolute joke and should never be allowed to do a game again in any conference higher then the Patriot League.

Yeah the officials defintely had it in for Maryland tonight. I wish these guys had called the Carolina game cause Maryland got some "generous" calls at the end of that one.

Maybe if Maryland had made or attempted a few more three-pointers...

anders, complaining about the officiating?

What irony- it was the officials who saved their perfect home record dominance against Clemson.

If not for the men in the striped shirts, we could be talking about 1-53, not 0-54.

The 3 pointer is not and never has been a major part of Maryland's game plan. Why go away from what you do ? All I am saying is that this official is a true DOOK fan.You can look it up.This is not sour grapes as I think the level of officiating has reached new depths throughout the sport. You can not allow middle aged or older men to work games on consecutive nights and travel on game days and expect that they will not get tired.IMHO the NCAA has to regulate them.

Over/under: 3 SEC teams in the big dance?

I would say LSU (24-4, 12-1 SEC) is in. The remaining schedules for the rest are:

South Carolina (20-6, 9-4 SEC): @ Vandy, Tennessee, @ Georgia
Florida (21-7, 8-5 SEC): Tennessee, @ Miss. St., Kentucky
Kentucky (19-9, 8-5 SEC): LSU, Georgia, @ Florida
Tennessee (17-10, 8-5 SEC): @ Florida, @ South Carolina, Alabama

A lot of basketball yet to be played, and none of these teams can afford to lose any more games. Should be interesting to see it play out.

Who says the regular season doesn't mean anything? ;)

The SEC should be a one big league this year :) (half-kidding)

LSU's schedule is a joke.

No need to belittle them...Tiger fans are aware that LSU has a fairly easy schedule this year, especially with the entire SEC as weak as they are. Hopefully serious teams like UConn won't stumble against them, or any other SEC team in the NCAA...that would be humiliating for them, wouldn't it?

Lawmakers want Calhoun reprimanded

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The leaders of the Connecticut General Assembly's higher education committee say UConn coach Jim Calhoun should be reprimanded for his tirade at a freelance journalist who questioned his $1.6 million salary.

Sen. Mary Ann Handley, D-Manchester, and Rep. Roberta Willis, D-Lakeville, say Calhoun's outburst Saturday does not reflect well on him or the state's flagship university.

"His recent behavior was unacceptable and we request that the university take appropriate disciplinary action to reinforce the high ethical standards we have come to expect from our flagship institution," the lawmakers wrote in a letter to UConn President Michael J. Hogan.

Both legislators said Calhoun should be reminded that he is a role model for many athletes and students.

In a statement, Hogan called Calhoun a "valued member of the UConn community" and said the reporter was also to blame for the controversy.

"The question he was asked about his salary was perfectly fair, although the reporter, as Coach Calhoun suggested, might have found a more appropriate and less provocative setting for his inquiry," Hogan said. "I am sure that we all regret the controversy, including Coach Calhoun, and I can assure you that we will continue to encourage all members of the UConn community to resist temptation and treat others in a judicious and respectful manner, no matter what the circumstances."

Typical from politicians, especially with a D after their name. Once again, they've got a Hall of Fame coach who just won his 800th game, has won 2 NC's and has one of the best teams in the country this year and they are hassling him over his salary. There are plenty of people who have made ill gotten gains in this country Jim Calhoun is not one of them.

OK, so there are three you you who feel that way. You're still outnumbered!! :p

I would think that these days these state representatives would have more important things to do than to be concerned with how the university is being perceived by the outside world.

I think Geno Auriemma summed it up pretty well:

“You’re just not prepared for it,” Auriemma said. “You come in and you ask somebody, ‘Hey, how was attacking the zone, or how was their offense different?’ You’re just not prepared for it probably. So it’s probably a little bit of a stunner.

“That’s one of the perks that you have working at a state school. Everybody knows what you do. Everybody knows what you have. And there comes a point in time when you’re going to be faced with that. You just don’t expect it in this setting.

“If somebody calls up campus and says, ‘Hey, we’ve got a guy that wants to come up and do a story on this.’ But to have it happen in this setting, I don’t think I’d wish that on anybody. I’m sure Jim was thrown for a loop, and I’m sure he handled it better than most coaches would handle it. I would not have wanted to be that guy 20 years ago and asked Jim that question. So I think Jim handled it pretty well, if you ask me.

“I think it’s unfair in that setting. I would even go so far as to say it’s unfair to ask someone who’s worked that hard to get to where they are and insinuate that they don’t deserve it. I think it’s unfair in this setting, and I would venture to say it’s unfair in any setting.

He is absolutely right....but when it is KNOWN your salary...not because of whispers but public knowledge...it is open game. I ALSO agree it could have been handled BETTER by the reporter.....

I bet you are also the same guy that can overlook coaches like Bobby Knight because of his won-loss history....:

...what was it he said to Connie Chung....oh yeah, "I think that if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it." ...:up

Yep, I agree that there is a time and place for that discussion, and right after a game is probably not one of them. Calhoun even suggested that they talk separately, but the "reporter" (political activist) persisted....

Actually no. I think Bobby Knight is an a**hole. I just have a problem with people, cough liberals cough, trying to demonize everyone who makes a lot of money. You want to target someone? Try Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech. This guy completely stinks as a coach, currently 1-12 in the ACC, yet he'll coach there forever. Why? Because GT doesn't have the cash to buy him out. They gave him like a 10 year extension after their fluke run to the FF a few years ago and they blew their wad chasing Chan Gailey out as football coach. If anyone should have to apologize for what they make it's guy like this not Jim Calhoun.
