NCAA Basketball 2008-09 Season

Thanks for posting that. I heard about it but hadn't seen it yet. I love Calhoun's response! He put that naive Obama koolaid drinker in his place (what a dumbass). "Get some facts" Calhoun yells to the idiot, as if facts ever mattered to him and those who think like he does.

As Calhoun pointed out, the amount of money and attention UConn basketball brings to the school trumps his salary, which is another way of saying that Calhoun essentially pays for himself, and then some. So though it would be nice to live in a country where teachers make more than coaches and policemen more than middle relievers, the reality is that such a country doesn't exist, and dumb people are the only ones who can't grasp why.

Amen brother! As I watch my stocks tumble daily, I now consider Jim Calhoun a spokesman. Maybe he'll run into Chris Dodd up there in Connecticut and kick his ass too. :D :up

LOL - post of the year.

Sabres - call me when Memphis PLAYS a team as good as any of the teams UConn has, much less beats them.

I can't believe Kansas STILL has a shot to win the Big 12.

How they are playing this well despite losing everyone from last year's title-winning teams us beyond me.

Pretty impressive. Kind of like what Roy Williams did after the 05 NC. Kansas caught a huge break with Blake Griffin being out tonight and the Big XII overall isn't that good, but Kansas is looking a lot better than, say, Florida these days.

Do they have any shot at repeating?

The guy was interviewed by Dan LeBetard and he DID have his facts straight....problem is he picked the wrong time to bring it up. Fact of the matter is, it is a state institution AND other coaches in other sports HAVE taken a freeze or a pay cut.

So before you guys go kissing Calhoun's ass.....listen to what he had to say in it's ENTIRTY!

Select the Ken Kreyeske interview....

No. Calhoun was right. Basketball programs like Connecticut's are highly profitable, as are major college football programs. They generate millions of dollars in revenue that these schools would otherwise not have. Look at the athletic budgets for major programs like UConn and compare it to an Ivy League school then you'll get a sense of what Calhoun is worth. Coaches like Calhoun are not the same as a university english professor or some bureaucrat working for the state so it's completely apples and oranges to throw the state institution rap at these guys.

$0 of Calhoun's salary comes from the State General Fund, aka taxpayers. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

To be honest, Calhoun didn't really fly off of the handle until the blogger accused the media contingent of not covering this "news"

The guy is an attention-seeking windbag, nothing more.

Why? They are paid BY THE STATE WITH TAX MONEY....The issue is not the money he makes with endorsements, the issue is the money he makes being paid by the university. You have OTHER coaches from OTHER programs making the sacrifice to what the university pays them. No one is asking them to sacrifice his pay from endorsement....that is not the issue with this guy....and he CLEARLY says it on the interview.

DID YOU HEAR the interview??!! Don't make judgement without hearing the interview. He gets 1.2 million FROM the University...and where do you think that money comes from, seeing that it is a state university? LIke I said, I see his guys point when it come to his salary FROM THE UNIVERSITY....he has NO ISSUES with the money he makes from endorsement deals and the like. He probably pulls down twice if not 3 times the amount he gets from the University...if other coaches from other conferences and other sports can make the sacrifice....considering that the university is in dire need of money....why can't he?

Again, listen to the interview COMPLETELY.

salsa - you're 100% wrong.

Calhoun is a STATE EMPLOYEE (which was the blogger's question, as being the "highest paid state employee". His salary, however, IS NOT DERIVED from taxpayer funds. It's derived from donations to the UConn Athletic Dev. Foundation.

You are correct Sir. Most larger state schools get the majority of their funding from sources other than state taxes. For instance, Ohio State get's 85% of their annual budget from non-public sources. The state's share is less than 15%.

Exactly. At LSU, Les Miles' contract includes a set base salary, multimedia compensation, athletic and academic incentives, and additional money from the university's athletic foundation. These coaches don't just suck money out of a University sending it into debt like Kreyeske's dumbass is assuming. That's what pissed off Calhoun.

This guy is an activist with an agenda, and doesn't care about the facts. If he's so concerned about "straddling young people with debt" as he said in his interview, why doesn't he go after the people in Washington who are this very day doing that exact same thing to young people for years to come, and to an unprecedented extent? Again, because he has an agenda which is about himself, you can bet the farm on it.

and trust me, I heard the whole thing - do you think it's been ignored here in CT? :)
If it would please salsa maybe they should just have a referendum on this in Connecticut. I think Calhoun would have the support of the people.
