2009 NFL Draft Countdown

I think the Lion's are playing the draft game here. Everyday there is a new article about who they are looking at, a new rumor about who they will pick. This is all a smokescreen, in order to produce two things - #1- leverage in contract negotiations. If we don't like your demands, we will talk to prospect B, etc... #2 - Maybe tempt somebody in to trading up for the #1 pick.

The truth is that this is a crappy year to have the #1 pick. (They couldn't even get that right.) Drafting a QB in this spot is just a waste. If they want to get a QB, just wait till next season and use that top 5 pick we will inevitably have. I just don't see any "impact" players this season, so why not trade down for a couple of picks? Our needs are a LT and a defense. A lot of defense. I'd rather see them spend that first pick on a man-eating DE, but there are no real standouts this season, no Reggie Whites. On the other hand there are about 5 standout LT's, so that's where I would start. Let's protect Chilipepper's backside and see if this guy can be an All-Pro again. Funny enough, we have depth issues at WR, but I expect they may address that problem in free agency. RB is also thin, but the answer lies in FA also.

The area of biggest concern is the sieve they call our defense. 5 picks in the first 85. we should be able to find some building blocks there for the defense.

Having said all that, my bet is that since we are talking about the LIONS here, the first pick in the 2009 NFL draft will be Mathew Stafford, QB, University of Georgia.

They just can't help themselves.

how amazing is that that we draft all these WR, and we have one on our roster, well not that amazing I guess when you are looking at the team how is picking. I agree I think the lions will pick Stafford, despite all the help on D they need. They were 0-16 for many, many reason but much of that was the D!!

Originally I stated the need for my Browns to go after a big-time LB with the #5 selection. Since the combine, everyone seems to have Aaron Curry from Wake Forrest as the #1 LB in the draft, ahead of my personal favorite, Rey Maualuga.

If Curry is still there, I would be plenty satisfied in drafting him though. He seems to have all the intangibles, and is considered a "safer" pick than Maualuga. Personally, you probably can't go wrong with either one...

However, what if Curry is gone at #5? Do the Browns take the best player available or do they draft on need and possibly select Maualuga a lot earlier than foretasted? What if Michael Crabtree is drops to us? The offseason surgery will most likley effect his draft status. What if Crabtree is the next Larry Fitzgerald?

Oh man... I'm starting to get psyched for April 25-26th!

This could also work out. If Braylon can improve on catching the ball, whoever Cleveland picks as starting QB could possibly team up with Crabtree and Edwards and form a new triple-threat at offense.

Sabres, I need your expertise. TT is your College team. You've probably seen more of Crabtree than most. In your opinion, is Crabtree the real deal?

Braylon showed sings of being a malcontent last year. If the new regime has proved anything so far with the Winslow trade, it's that they won't put up with any of that nonsense. Plus, with a contract expiration coming up for BE, nothing would surprise me. With that said, would Crabtree serve as a legitamite replacement?

I think he is legit. He's not a guy who will run like the wind, but he has good breakaway speed and is very sure-handed.

He won't run a 40 super fast, but when you get him in the open or running towards the end zone, good luck stopping him.

Another factor is his quarterback- do you think Quinn or Anderson has a stronger arm or deeper throwing arm? Remember, Crabtree did play for one of the most prolific college QB's ever in Harrell. Which QB could be more lethal throwing to Crabby?

Also, for everyone who thinks Texas Tech offensive players don't fit in the NFL- Wes Welker also played his college ball under Mike Leach- he's turned out pretty well. He just needed the right team/players to turn him loose. (I can't help but wonder had he stayed in Miami, how would he have fared with Pennington at QB)

I don't see Harrell becoming a great NFL QB, there are alot of QB's that look fabulous in college that are ordinary or a back up in the NFL.

It all depends on what you have around you.
Welker was ok at Miami, but much better in NE.... He left if I recall correctly , for the better team, I can't say I blame him at all. went to a better team with a better system.

Its just the lions luck that in all years to have a number one pick, there is no clear cut number one that stands out. I think when its draft day the go QB

Lie on 's are always in that boat.
Even if there was a stand out QB (and there haven't been many of late) they would pick him and he would become lost in Lion land and turn into nothing ....

Had Cutler been taken by the Lie Ons when they had the opportunity, he would be nothing today, slightly less than he is becoming today.

Raji tests positive for drug test

Does this effect his draft stock?
“Defensive tackle B.J. Raji, whose draft stock has soared over the past six months, had a positive drug test at February’s combine, NFL team sources have told SI.com. It’s unknown to SI.com which drug triggered the positive result, but NFL scouts were made aware before the 2008 season that Raji had tested positive for marijuana during his time at Boston College.”

SI Writer Explains Why the Lions Should Let Draft Clock Expire!

And he's serious too....

SI: ‘LIONS SHOULD LET DRAFT CLOCK EXPIRE’ | With Leather - The Cleveland Steamer of sports blogs
Here’s some free advice for the Lions: Strongly consider passing on the No. 1 pick. Just let the time run out, Minnesota Vikings-style. Don’t bother skimming the rest of the column looking for an April Fool’s Day reveal. It’s a serious suggestion.

The money paid to the top five rookies has gotten so steep that this approach could be a legitimate option for a team. With the top pick, the Lions are looking at doling out a contract upward of $35 million in guaranteed compensation.

J'Nathan Bullock to NFL?!

CSU Viking Basketballer to seek NFL career, ala Antonio Gates....

Bullock is very similar in size to the aforementioned Gates, being listed at 6?5?, 240 pounds. Also akin to the Kent State standout, Bullock did not play football in college.

Reportedly, several NFL teams have already contacted Gary Waters about Bullock’s future, including the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland State is holding a “pro day” next Friday, and there will likely be several team scouts in attendance. There is little chance that Bullock will be drafted come this April, but the Gates story shows that this is only a minor road block if the ability and the dedication are there. I doubt many fans would be upset if their team gave him a shot.

Mark Sanchez Interview on Mike & Mike

Highlights:

-won't be at the draft, but will instead be at home in SoCal; wanted to be around family; his grandma is 92 years old and can't really travel.

-has heard he could go anywhere between picks 1-19.

-acknowledged the draft is like a poker game and no teams want to show their hand. Trying to disregard the mock drafts.

-mentioned he has had private workouts with Detroit (#1), Seattle (#4), Jacksonville (#8), & San Francisco (#10). I know the Browns have visited with him, but I'm a little surprised they apparently haven't worked him out. Of course, it could be that they told him not to talk about it.

WTH would Cleveland do with him? You can trade Anderson or Quinn, and draft him, and gain what? If they draft him early his bonus and salary would be a killer for another bench player, no different then what you have now. I don't see the Browns even sniffing in his direction.

Who knows, but there are vicious rumors of Mangini accepting trade offers for BQ and DA.

No one knows what the new regime is up to either because they never talk to the media.
