NCAA Basketball 2008-09 Season

I think UCONN will win this one, but when they play at Pittsburgh, I think Pitt will win that one.
O ye of little faith. Huge win for Pitt. Dejaun Blair is a monster. 22 points 23 rebounds. :yikes Looks like it's OU's turn to be #1.

Blair is very good. Congrats to Pitt on a big win tonight.

Apparently there was another reason why UNC struggled against Miami on Sunday. In addition to Ty Lawson's sickness which slowed our transition game, Tyler Hansbrough got a concussion during the game. That explains his poor 2nd half. Roy Williams said this on his radio show tonight. Also, on the show he said “Tyler Zeller and I met again today, and we’re about ready to make an announcement. Right now, I would not be surprised if Tyler did play Wednesday night against North Carolina State.”

Sounds like Tyler Zeller is about to return. For those that don't know, Zeller is a 7 foot freshman who runs the court very well and has outside shooting range. He was a McDonald's All-American and a 5 star recruit. He scored 18 points in his very first college game and was hurt in the 2nd game of the year against Kentucky. He will add some much needed depth to our front court.

With Texas down 8 right now to Texas A&M, it looks like Oklahoma shouldn't have any trouble with Texas.
Maybe not, but that's the Gameday game so maybe Texas can step up. OU still has to go to Missouri and play Kansas. Carolina should be #1 again soon.

ESPN's latest Bracketology was released earlier tonight.

Here's the top three conferences (bid wise), with seedings in parenthesis:

ACC- 8 teams: UNC (1), Wake Forest (2), Duke (3), Clemson (4), Florida St. (8), Virginia Tech (9), Boston College (11), Miami (11)

Big East- 8 teams: UConn (1), Pitt (1), Louisville (2), Marquette (4), Villanova (4), Syracuse (6), West Virginia (7), Providence (12)

Big Ten- 6 teams: Michigan St. (2), Purdue (5), Ohio St. (5), Illinois (5), Minnesota (9), Wisconsin (10)

I think it looks pretty good, except I think a couple of ACC teams are getting dissed with the seedings. Thoughts?

Dont know it should be fun though. If Pitt. somehow plays Uconn in the national semifinal, I think Pitt. could beat them. I dont know whos going to win but thats the fun of March Madness.

The "College Gameday" basketball version, while decent (if only someone put on mascot heads ala Corso), has something that annoys me- a tendency to go to not-so-big games on Saturday night.

1. They schedule games in advance that, sometimes, aren't meaningful.

This week, they got it right- yes, Texas is struggling, but it will determine the new #1. (An Oklahoma win gives them the top spot or a Texas upset makes UNC the top dog.)

Other times- not so much.

For instance, on February 28th, ESPN's Primetime game will be UCLA/Cal. IMO, Ohio State/Purdue has more significance than that game.

March 7th's primetime game is Louisville/West Virginia. Seriously? I know Louisville has arisen from the dead, but West Virginia's not that great of a team.

Why they chose this over what will be a gigantic rematch between Pittsburgh and UConn is beyond me. Hell, they could even chosen Syracuse/Marquette or Cal/Arizona State, which have bigger implications!

No offense to Mountaineer fans, but the WVU Coliseum does not compare to the Petersen Events Center.

IMO, The Oakland Zoo is THE most hostile environment in college basketball. Not Cameron Indoor, not the Dean Dome.

Occasionally, there's a perfect storm- North Carolina/Duke or last year's Memphis/Tennessee #1/#2 clash- but more often than not, the matchups are less than meaningful.

I agree with your point on Gameday. The problem compared to football is that basketball schedules are made before the season starts and are pretty inflexible. Football games are generally not assigned times and networks until just a couple of weeks prior to the games so it's easier for the networks to cherry pick the best games and for ESPN to send Gameday to the best matchup. It'd be nice if there was some way around this. I loved it last year when Gameday did the Carolina-dook game, but this year the rematch is on CBS in the afternoon and CBS will probably miss the tip. And this past week's Gameday game Ohio St-Wisconsin should have been on ESPNU. Talk about a yawner. :sleeo

I will diagree on one thing though. Pitt has the most hostile environment in college basketball? No way. I've never seen a game there where the crowd played a role.

Whoever gets dissed in the ACC would have no shot at winning the tournament anyway, and would probably be bounced early. Starting to think the ACC could be over-rated.

I think only Carolina has a real shot at the championship, and they won't be favorites by any means. The rest of them could all be exposed in what is starting to look like a parity league with not a lot at the top.
