NCAA Basketball 2008-09 Season

Miami's hating life right now. 3 OT losses plus tonight's game have them where they are. Miami's better than half the teams in the league, but are in a hole now. The upcoming Miami-FSU game will be kinda big. I wonder if the fans will get into it.

Good call. That was a clutch win. Miami is a tough team and Jack McClinton is just sick. The Canes have a hole to dig out of now that they are 4-7 in the ACC, but they can do it.

Carolina's starting to pull away from the pack. 9 straight wins now. If we get Zeller back forget about it.

Miami was missing the 2nd most important person on the team. I wonder HOW the outcome would have been if Dwayne Collins, their 2nd leading scorer and leading rebounder if he had not injured his ankle in practice earlier in the week. BUT those are the breaks....But I have to disagree with you Bill, I think Miami has been able to expose a definate chink in their armor. I would say, we shall see come ACC tournament time, but those games favor a Duke or a NC home game so badly. But we shall see.

Tough break in that regard, but Ty Lawson was under the weather for UNC, not that it affected his 3 point shooting. :D Miami is tough in that zone, but not many teams play zone almost exclusively so Carolina won't have to worry about that too much. Play man to man against Carolina and you die. Syracuse and Louisville are only other teams I can think of off the top of my head that plays lots of zone. And Syracuse's zone these days is garbage.

Last night showed that Miami is just not in Carolina's league yet, plain and simple. It also showed that with a good amount of zone, Carolina IS vulnerbale and Hansbrough CAN be nuteralized. I am now convince he is gonna be a very good college player and that's it....another Christian Laettner.

Now the Syracuse comment was nothing more than a dig because our post had nothing to do with Syracuse. I would say that Syracuse's zone is garbage if they were 10-15, but right now, they are 18-7 in THE toughest conference in ALL of college basketball so let's try to be a little less dramatic and not exaggerrate too much.;)

Carolina has been bad against the zone for years. So this is no new revelation that Miami came across. In fact it is no secret that the way to beat Carolina is make them play half court offense. Their half court offense isn't nearly as good as their transition game. What helped make Miami's zone work so well is that Ty Lawson was sick and couldn't push the ball like he normally does. That cuts into the best way to beat a zone. Beat it down court.

Let me further add that one of primary reasons why Carolina is bad against the zone is that Roy doesn't teach it as a defense (you'll notice that Carolina rarely uses it). Hence they really can't do a good job preparing for it when they do face it.

For those outside of Pittsburgh, there is more than one game tonight...

7:00 PM Pittsburgh - Connecticut ESPN
9:00 PM Texas - Texas A&M ESPN

Enjoy!

Whether or not a zone can stop Carolina is irrelevant. Most teams don't play it. Miami is unusual because they have committed themselves to playing zone for several games now and have gotten pretty good at it. And zone defenses don't work for everyone who tries it. When Maryland tried to go zone on UNC Carolina hit 16 3 point shots to beat them. And Syracuse's zone is garbage. The Orange are allowing 90-100 points nearly every game and if a zone is designed to do anything it's slow the game down. Clearly it's not working. If anyone wants to know how you play zone defense properly they should watch Miami play.

Syracuse is allowing an average of 71.7 points per game AND has given up more than 90 points 3 times ALL SEASON...HARDLY the "nearly 90-100 nearly every game" you seem to spit out. With as much as you exaggerrate, you swear to everyone you are 6-3 but really your 5-7....

Getting back to basketball talk....The zone is designed to stop in the inside game, not good against good outside shooting teams. And the team that they have given up all these "90-100 points in nearly every game" have shot well from the 3.

Memphis moves up to fifth?!

WOW- I thought they'd struggle big-time this season!
Right now Memphis is like Oklahoma. They don't play anyone good, at least not in C-USA, so they never lose. Oklahoma does eventually have to play some good teams. Memphis does not. They're looking at no worse than a 2 seed right now, and I think they've proven that it's not wise to bet against them in March just because they come from a crappy conference.

True, but did you expect Memphis to rise this high after losing Rose and Douglas-Roberts?

I thought the loss of talent would weaken them this year.

I thought they would be an 8 or 9 seed at best.

They are one of this season's biggest overchievers, IMO.

Yeah but C-USA still stinks so I always figured Memphis would continue to rack up the wins there. They did lose a few games early on, but that's no big deal since everyone does. Memphis is clearly not as good as they were last year, but to be a 8-9 seed you have to lose about 10 games to good competition. Memphis only has 3 losses so they rise in the polls as others lose.

I'm no Calipari fan but he does seem to be coaching them up this year. You can always tell who the good coaches are because they are the ones who still win even when they lose lots of talent. Bill Self is doing the same thing at Kansas. Funny, nobody talk about how much Self sucks as a coach anymore (I never believed he did suck).

The Mountain West could get as many as four bids to the Big Dance. UNLV, BYU, Utah and San Diego St. all have a chance.

However, I doubt that the MWC gets four in. There's always upsets in the conference tournaments that reduce the at-large pool.
