NCAA Basketball 2008-09 Season

Overrated? The ACC has four teams in the Top 10. The only league better than that is the NBA.

Doesn't matter. Basketball rankings are for people with nothing else to do. The only thing that matters is the tournament. ;)

The ACC is overrated.

She does have a point there.

Since 1994, the ACC has won only three national titles and has had a tendency to fall on their faces in the Final Four (Duke in '99, UNC losing four national semifinals in a six-year span).

The ACC as a conference, IMO, is not overrated.

However, their lack of tournament success (national title or bust) is something that can't be ignored.

Convienent that you go back to 1994 and ignore the 3 titles that ACC teams won the three previous years. Nobody, least of all the Big Ten, can top the performance of ACC teams in March.

It's funny how rankings are only for people with nothing better to do, yet fans of certain teams that reside in central Ohio love to talk of nothing more than how their team is consistently ranked in the Top 10 every year in spite of consistently losing to every Top 10 team they play. Teams that make a habit of that in basketball won't be ranked in the Top 10 for very long. People might, dare I say, call them overrated.

Until this year, you could have also mentioned Texas Tech as a team that falls apart against the big boys.

College football is different. Rankings are the only thing that matters, actually, since the top two teams are the only ones who play for the championship. And that's determined mostly by rankings. Teams ranked 3 and down play a consolation game.

But in college basketball every team in the top 25 (and a whole lot more) will get into the tournament. So there is no reason to argue over who is ranked higher than who, or which conference is better than which. It will all shake out before our eyes in March and April, ending all the speculation.

It's like when Duke plays North Carolina soon. It'll be fun, probably a great game. But it won't matter. Both teams will probably be 1 seeds regardless of the outcome, a 2 seed at worst. So the outcome won't affect anything except people who like to crow about where they're ranked. But the only thing that counts is who is left standing at Ford Field in April. I think we can all agree THAT will be the number one team.

So go ahead and tell everyone how much better you are than everyone else. Right now it's just noise. Unlike football, your team (or conference) will have to actually win the games to prove they're the best.

As has been rumored before, Marcus Ginyard will take a medical redshirt and get another year of eligibility. He is currently a senior.

Another bench player, William Graves has been suspended for the rest of the year. I've read some rumors as to why, but I won't post them here.

As a positive note for UNC, Tyler Zeller is going to be medically cleared to come back. It will be up to Zeller and his parents if he wants to come back and play just a partial season or take a medical red shirt and get back this year eligibility wise.

Dare I reference post #166 again?...........

Here's a count of National Championships by division. Any way you slice it, this is the only thing that matters. Your beloved ACC has just as many Tourney wins as 3 other conferences (including the Big-10) and 3 less than the Pac 10. Suck on that for a while.......

13 - Pacific 10
10 - Atlantic Coast
10 - Big East
10 - Big Ten
10 - Southeastern
4 - Big XII
3 - Mountain West
2 - West Coast
1- Patriot, Horizon, Atlantic 10, Conference USA
also, CCNY has one championship although they are no longer in Division 1

UConn again?

Ugh. They just don't go away.

No offense, hancox, but I'm not a fan of the Huskies.

They are similar to Duke:

1. A coach who gets a lot of media exposure

2. Get a ton of games on TV/ESPN

3. When they have a high ranking, everyone slurps them- before they gag to an inferior opponent (George Mason, anyone?)

4. Star players get all the hype. Ray Allen got just as much attention as any Duke guy ever did. Ditto for Richard Hamilton or Okafor.

I hate UConn just as much as anders hates Duke.

...so the truth comes out, finally.

Notice how both schools are in either the ACC or Big East - it's not our fault that they both have mega contract with ESPN, and aren't exiled to Fox Sports like the B12 and Pac 10. That handles 1 and 2.

As for 3 - a one-time gag does not a program make. Ever school has one of these (UNC to Weber State, for example).

And 4? I'm not going to say Ray Allen and Hamilton aren't/weren't hyped, but you're talking about MULTIPLE TIME NBA ALL-STARS THERE. In Allen's case, a possible Hall of Famer! They DESERVE the hype.

What grates me and most people that hate Dook is the hype is usually unwarranted. JJ Redick has fizzled. I don't want to hear about the magic sore ribs of Chris Duhon anymore. Dookie V talking about Dook about 2 minutes into a top-10 matchup of UConn and Louisville - etc etc etc.

Sure, UConn gets some hype, but it's *usually* warranted.

Let's see if you finally care to respond to one of my posts...

You want hype, Sabres? I give thee the polls.

anders - come on now. The Big East is better. Yes, we have our dregs, but the top 8 in this league are outstanding.
