Hopper Announcements

For us the math actually works out pretty well.

Current:
Theater room: 722 ("free")
Living room: 622 ($17)
Guest bedroom: 4900 ($7)
Sunroom: SD backfeed from 722
DVR fee: $6
Total: $30 + programming

5 sat tuners (4 DVR) + 2 OTA DVR

New:
Theater room: Hopper #1 ("free")
Living room: Hopper #2 ($7)
Guest bedroom: Joey #1 ($7)
Sunroom: Joey #2 ($7)
Whole-house DVR fee: $10
Total: $31 + programming

6 sat tuners (all DVR)

$1/month extra to get HD to the sunroom and the ability to play DVR shows in the guest bedroom, with the hopeful eventual ability to share recordings between Hoppers AND regain the OTA DVR? Sounding pretty good to me. (And yes, upgrade fees, but those are one-time fees that quickly vanish in the budget :) )

The "no mixed VIP / hopper" accounts deal is what is going to make this a deal breaker for a TON of customers. how many people have a 211 or 311 for their camper/fish house/ motor-home/ cabin etc that they're currently set up with? Whether they're cheating or not, they're not going to want to give this up, or have to pay for a separate account for a single receiver. For this reason alone, the hopper system is going to do nothing for Dish's bottom line.

and whoever thought up the hopper/joey name should be fired. it's a stupid name, and a ridiculous marketing strategy, as usual for dish. They're whole marketing dept should be fired, and they should start over by hiring whoever is in charge of marketing for Direct TV...

A very astute observation. The sad thing is "Hopper-Joey" is one of their better ideas.
They would have been better off just calling it the Hopper System, or maybe Rabbit, Stream, Dish Hub, etc SYSTEM. And, continued to have model numbers for the units themselves. Rabbit 1 for server, Rabbit 2 for client, etc. It would sound sound less silly.

sorry if i missed it, can i get a hopper and zero joeys for only the additonal $4 month whole home dvr fee?
i do not need a joey for my house, can i skip the $7 joey fee?

I was hopefull but think I will have to pass, really wanted whole house DVR.

#1 Free for 200 or above, but wait they charge you $99 to install them. Yea that is free, UPS them to me and I will keep my $99 thank you, its not rocket science to hook them up.

#2 I now have a 622 and 722 running 3 TV's. So if I switch to a Hopper and 2 Joeys it is going to cost me $1 more and I loose a tunner going from 4 to 3. I can live with the 1$ more if I still had 4 tunners

#3 I think I am correct that they no longer take IR signals? So I know have to by two new higher dollar Harmony remotes that have RF.....

No... the Free for AT 200 and up customers is for NEW CUSTOMERS only. For most existing customers the cost to upgrade will be $99.

Depends on what you watch, with Prime Time Anytime you could be watching live TV in all rooms at the same time, making it apear like y ou h ave more then 3 tuners. :D (Ie one watching HBO, another watching discovery, another watching FOX and another watching NBC.)

Will work fine with IR, just like the 922. :)

Hmmm. In the Offers at the bottom it seems to say that if you have the Top 250 package, you'll get a $30/mo credit for 1 year. Is that true?

Or is that for new customers only?

Probably only for new customers.

If its for new customers only, maybe they should word it as "order Top 250". If it says "have Top 250", that leads me to believe it covers existing customers.

No please remember the retailer chat is for retailers who sell service to new customers. Thats why they worded it the way they did. :)

Yea the Prime Time thing is pretty usless for me as we record maybe one or two network shows, so that is of little help. Wish they gave you the option of Prime Time or fourth tunner. Good to know about the remote though, will have to give it some more thought. If they will get rid of the $99 it would be alot easier, it is always great to get taken advantage of for being a long time paying customer, I never understood that. Oh well have to call and threaten them with leaving again, works some times....

You know most people hated the name "Wii" including me. Look how many people bought those. Trust me, the name is not going to hurt this system at all. It's actually a great idea for marketing. It sticks in people's heads and people will talk about it more. The average customer does not know anything about receiver numbers not do they care. When I ask a customer what receiver they have they either tell me Dish 500 or that Dish 1000 something. It's not about sounding like a machine it's about being apealing for the mass market.

The whole cheat sheet is mostly for new customers. Those are the promo prices for when new customers sign up and you do not automatically get that $30 off. The customer automatically gets $20 off for 12 months then has to go online to get the additional $10 off for 12 months.

Yep, here's my breakdown for my 722/211k configuration:

722: free
DVR fee: $6
211k fee: $7
Total: $13

Hopper: free
DVR fee: $6
Whole-house fee: $4
Joey: $7
Joey: $7
Total: $24

Still only 3 tuners for both, so for the new UI and the ability to view all recordings on all three TVs it's an extra $11 per month. If the first Joey were included, then you're talking about a $4 increase; much more doable. It's essentially $7 to get the 2nd 722 tuner in HD....

Yeah I would like to upgrade to the hopper and joeys and the upgrade price of only $99 seems reasonable but I don't want the extra $11 monthly.

722k living room and SDTV bedroom: Free
DVR: $6
211k with EHD mancave: $7
211k with EHD HDTV bedroom: $7
Total: $20

Hopper living room: free
DVR: $6
Whole-house: $4
Joey mancave: $7
Joey HDTV bedroom: $7
Joey SDTV bedroom: $7
Total: $11

I would like to upgrade but it looks like I'll be keeping my existing setup.

Edit: if I do upgrade I will probaly pay the $300 up front to get 2 hoppers instead of 1 and then use 2 joeys. The more I read about it the more I want it but I still don't like the increased equipment fees.

I sure hope DISH is reading these posts. It looks like the first Joey costing a $7 fee is being a deal breaker for a lot. Maybe they should reconsider it.

Remote control blues? Not anymore!

Dish says I own my receiver?
