I bought a new 322 receiver about 18 months ago, and for various reasons, never got it installed until yesterday. The guy tried forever to get it to work, and was told by Dish Tech Support, the software in the unit was too old to upgrade. Without the upgrade, I can't get the program guide or associated channels. Does this sound right? Can the unit be fine but the software be outdated?

With DISH Notwerk it is very possible. Leave receiver connected to satellite 119 Trans 19 overnight with the power turned off on the front of the receiver. Hopefully it will take a download, if not have DISH replace it.

Actually if the software is too old it will not take the download because it will not be in the target range. If you call Dish and give them the R00 and S00 numbers off the receiver and tell them that it has not been hooked up then they will "hit" the receiver and make it take the download. I had this happen when I had a receiver sitting in a closet disconnected for several months.

 Wrong, Wrong a hit will not force your receiver to take a download it only for authorization issues. HIFI1260 is correct make sure both tuners are off and leave it alone overnight. If the software is still targeted it will take the download. One last though is the factory software?
L07X (x=anything) go to menu, Factory Defaults, select yes for restoring factory defaults, then A/C receiver. Should come up to point dish, then exit point dish screen. Then it will take a download. :up

OK, maybe it is not called a "hit" then, but my receiver would not take the download (even with both tuners off and trying multiple reboots). I called E* and they said they "hit" it and the next time i turned the tuners off it took the download. Seems pretty fishy that it worked that time and not the dozen times right before that...

Thanks for all the help. Shutting off the unit worked partially the first night. I got more channels in the guide than I had. So I did that again the next night, but then in the morning, I had nothing. So I unplugged it, waited, and plugged it back in. I got the "unit not authorized" error. The install tech got this several times and called support each time and they supposedly corrected it. So I called support that morning, they sent an authorize signal, told me to wait 15 minutes, power down and back up. This worked. I now have all channels. Maybe that was the "hit" lakebum was talking about, not sure, but it has been 3 days and it appears fixed. Maybe you just need to get the right tech support person.

When will Dish give me my local channels?

Countdown!
