The NEW iPhone 4S Discussion

The union has said that the talks are stalemated and they are at least considering going back out on strike. i had not heard that the union was advising aboycott of the other carriers.

Sure enough, but what they do works great. Smooth as butter. ;)

The advantage of a closed ecosystem.

And while I don't yet own an iPhone, my iPad has never spontaneously rebooted the way my dang droid does, all the time.

The only time I've had spontaneous reboots was on early betas of CM7 both before it had 4G/Wimax support and on the initial Wimax enabled kernels. The photon has never rebooted spontaneously. I've made it go crazy by pulling a couple of APK files but that is not the fault of the OS, it's the fault of the user.

Cheers,

Wow...this is it? I figured out what the S means for on the 4S. The S stands for "seriously!?" As in, yes we seriously released a slightly modified iPhone4 with still no 4G capabilities. We seriously expect you to follow the cult and buy our new phone like you did with the iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, and 4. Please ignore the fact that more powerful phones have been released earlier this year. Ours is better since it has a picture of a fruit on the back.

I'll be getting one for the wife. Just have to decide to do it now, or wait until March for an additional $50 off the $299 price for the 32GB.

Let's see, it has entirely new guts that sports a processor that is twice as fast as the previous model, a GPU that is 7 times faster than the previous model, a camera that has 60% more pixels, adaptive IR filter, 5 element lens and and stabilization. It also is a world phone instead of having different models for different vendors so it can be used pretty much anywhere. It comes with an upgraded OS that adds or improves on over 200 features and a new voice assistant. But, they put it in the old case and didn't upgrade the number so it HAS to be inferior to the incremental updates that all the Android, Windows, etc. users rave about.

This is a pretty nice upgrade. The processor speed, graphics speed, camera, and the option 64 GB of memory are significant improvements. Siri functionality looks amazing (it certainly blows away the performance of the current Siri app). If I was out of contract and looking for a new phone, I'd definitely consider this one as the one to turn to. Given all the iOS apps I've invested in, I can't imagine myself going with an Android phone unless there was something insanely compelling about it.

That said, 4G and a larger screen would have made for nice additions to this phone. Despite that, I think there is plenty for individuals to be happy about.

I think the biggest news out of the press conference is that the 3GS is free under contract and the 4 is only $99 under contract. I can see this as driving smart phone adoption in the coming year.

At this point, I think I'm going to wait until my current contract is up in July before making a new phone decision. I think this delayed and incremental update to the iPhone puts them more on a path to a six month release cycle with these phones. I expect the next one sport a complete redesign and will have LTE support.

It's a nice upgrade, but the lack of 4G support is not what I would consider to be ideal. Android (the main competition) has been dual core for 8+ months and 4G capable for well over a year.

Agreed, 100%. Digi is just puffing smoke. :) This is a completely new phone, just has the same external case. sure, I wish it was a bit bigger, but everything else in it is brand-spanking new. And because it isn't a new form factor -- it means all of the existing peripherals will work for it.

They've probably made it just different enough externally that the old cases won't work. Cases for phones are a huge industry.

According to the apple website, the physical dimensions are exactly the same as the 4. The only wildcard would be if they altered the camera placements. That doesn't appear to be the case, so all 4 cases should work for the 4S.

Aren't there different cases for the 4 even, because of the changes made to the vzw version?

The vast majority of the people don't have LTE available to them and probably won't until the iPhone 5 is available. From what I've read the difference in battery life between 3G and 4G phones is significant so sticking with 3G and doubling the data transfer rate is a better solution for most buyers today. Next year will be a different story.

I've got the 3GS. I will wait a few weeks to see if there are any antenna problems. Upgrade would be worth it to me without dropped calls.:)

Would like better battery life on 3g using pandora, otunes, and the satellite guys app. here's hoping!!!
