I think that's the idea: if you are still on iPhone 3 or 3GS, the 4s makes a good upgrade. If you have iPhone 4 you can skip this one and wait for iPhone 5.

As disappointed as I am with the release, I have a 3GS also and will probably upgrade to the 4S instead of switching platforms entirely. I really don't want to have to re-buy all my apps, and I'm not an Android fan to begin with. It behaves like a cobbled together kludge, and it's highly inconsistent. WP7 is awesome, but it's missing a few things that I need right now (Dishpointer, DRA) My fiance has one and it's a sweet platform. My only other real option is RIM, but again it goes back to having to re-buy 2 years worth of apps. I'll more likely than not be staying with the iOS platform. I suppose I really just wanted a larger screen, better processor and faster data speed. They gave us a dual core A5 processor and a radio that's partially complaint with HSPA+ (HSDPA+) But still the same small screen. Two out of three isn't bad.

I find that since I got my iPad 2 I buy far fewer if any apps for my Droid, making it much easier to be open to alternatives when it comes to my choice in cell phones. With the 4S being a disappointment will likely finally consider a WP7 phone too.

I wanted the larger screen too, but since I pretty much do most work on the iPad, I'll live.

AnandTech - Why No LTE iPhone 5 in 2011? Blame 28nm Maturity, Check Back In Q2/Q3 2012

Anand blames TSMC not having its 28nm working yet... I wonder if Apple is waiting on Kal-El and new LTE at 28nm to put in iphone5. That would be quite a leap, and the battery life could match the 4S if they have the new super low power background processor with Kal-El and the 28nm Qualcomm chips.

So I was talking with my wife last night about the new 4S as like I have mentioned we are looking to swap from Sprint to Verizon due to living out in the country where we barely, if any, get any Sprint signal. For me it's between the 4S and an Android phone which I haven't decided the model. My wife told me this: "Why don't we just get the iPhone 4 once the price drops to $99?"

We have EVOs now. Why the heck would I want to swap out an EVO for something that is technically inferior?

I wouldnt focus so much on the specs part of it, instead look to see if it will meet your needs now. With the way apple does it you can almost be sure that it will be supported to do the vast majority of what the new ones will do until you get ready to upgrade, and you save a couple hundred to boot.
Just a thought.

You know James, for the last year my Droid experience has been ONE frustration after another, somehow they lost me, and the convergence of of my operating systems just makes sense. Plus I can still use google calendar and gmail and maps, the three google services I use every day. Even without the larger screen I am going to make the switch.

That's what happens when you drink a gallon of Apple juice I guess. Well, its one of the things that happens.

The only problem I have had with my Thunderbolt is the battery and now that I have the extended battery, there have been zero problems.

SIRI should work on the iPad 2 since it has the same processor... why is it being left behind?

I have the iOS 5 GM loaded on my iPad and many of the things shown yesterday in iOS 5 demos dont work on my iPad 2. If I double click the home button with the iPad in standby there is no option to take pictures... why? It has 2 cameras just like a 4S... Another thing they showed is if you go into the app store you can click on the Purchased button to see all the apps you purchased in the past, I am not seeing this on my iPad 2. Again I ask WHY?

Yes the iPad 2 has everything a iPhone 4S has except for the new camera.

I use the MIC on mine all the time and make Skype calls.

The only thing missing from it is the Phone App, which they could include on them since the AT&T and Verizon models use 3G and have a phone number assigned to them. The iPad is a big iPhone.

Because that's been Apple's M.O. for years. They need holdout features to make you run out and buy the ipad3, 4, 5, and 6. And there'll probably be a few "S" models in there too. So they can sprinkle on a 'new'(read: should've been in there since launch) feature or two, slap the next consecutive number on it, and the sheep will run out and buy it.

Exactly its still a darn good phone, and will work reliably. Unless you are in the "I've got a bigger Quadrant score than you" crowd, does it really matter?" And if it doesn't matter to your wife, get her the $99 iphone 4, and you can get yourself the iphone 4S. Still save $100.

Just looked on Verizon's website and they dropped the iPhone 4 16GB price down to $149.
