The NEW iPhone 4S Discussion

mperdue:

It's a nice upgrade, but the lack of 4G support is not what I would consider to be ideal. Android (the main competition) has been dual core for 8+ months and 4G capable for well over a year.

Exactly. It's the iPhone 2G all over again...release an EDGE only phone with no MMS, no multitasking etc, when 3G is the norm. Release a 3GS with a screen that phones from 2yrs ago were using. Now we have the 4S with features that have been out for quite a while and it's missing a few features.

I have to give it to Apple's marketing dept, they are absolutely amazing for selling a phone to people that is yesteryear's technology then the customers drink the koolaid and explain to everyone else why they don't need those new features.

Besides 4g, what exactly will it not do that users want? I know some wanted a larger screen, so let's not rehash that one.

Or maybe it's just that you don't like Apple?? That's kind of a kool aid too.

Other than LTE (which few need or really care about), what would it need? A six inch screen, a quad core processor? The 4S is twice as fast as its predecessor, it has a camera with specs that no other smartphone has that isn't point and shoot, 1080p video, a smart assistant that appears to run circles around google voice?? Seems to me the criticisms come from the 1% who hate being walled in, want to run some custom rom, have to have 4g bandwidth (why? So they can stream netflix in a four inch screen???), and spend far more time tweaking their phone than actually using it. The iPhone is for the other 99%.

I think too many are focusing on just the sheer specs far too much. For the most part, they havent even maxed out the tech from two years ago.

I think you're taking some of this too personally.

  1. It isn't twice as fast on most tasks. Most apps are single threaded and the per core throughput on each core is only marginally faster than the A4. This is not an iOS/Apple exclusive. Lots of misunderstanding about multi-core processing.
  2. For photos, there are a number of other cameras with comparable sensors. The video capture I'm not as sure about -- I know the photon maxes out @ 720p, there might be others that can capture 1080p from an 8 Mpixel sensor.
  3. The freedom to run custom ROMs is a big deal -- and several manufacturers are now providing phones to groups like CyanogenMod. Why? Because they just might be able to come up with something better and with Cyanogen Mods case, they have.
  4. I root my phone so that I don't pay for something that is a core part of the Source Code, i.e. WiFi tethering.
  5. 4G speed is great when you're doing remote support from a phone. And yes, I have done just that. I also use it when I'm traveling and needing to do remote support. 8-12 Mbits/second trumps maybe 1/2 Megabits from most hotels.
  6. I'll freely admit I'm a geek, but I'm nowhere near spending more time tweaking my phone than actually using it.

Philosophically speaking, why shouldn't I have complete control over a device that's my property? Riddle me that one Batman ;)

That argument is a red herring. You only have complete control over your Android phone if you root it. Stock software is full of bloatware and disabled features. This is no different than a stock iPhone vs. a Jailbroken iPhone. (Except, of course, that Apple doesn't allow carriers to install bloatware.)

For those that want to do so, rooting is fairly easy... and the manufacturers are making it easier by unlocking bootloaders. This then gives owners complete control over what they can do with their phone.

The fact that I can load a custom ROM of my selection is a big deal to me... Then again, I'm one of those crazies that runs multiple OSs as required for my needs.

John, actually I think you are making my point. But I've got work to do, and not going to rehash it. Enjoy Cyanogen and your customized phone. Good for you. I don't have a problem with that. I DO have a problem with Google and carriers shipping stock software that is incredibly buggy. Don't have to worry about that from Cupertino. The thing I don't get is why the "geeks" feel so threatened by Apple; and the masses who are completely satisfied with their products. It does what they want.

Ok, gotta write a lecture... logging out... :)

So the question now is, what is missing from the iPhone 4s?

I think for me is NFC support, so that I can use my phone as a credit card. As I said before I don't need 4g as I have it now and never use it.

I know some people would like an fm radio built in, my evo has that now and I never use it as it only works when I have wired headphones plugged in to it.

Other then that's what's missing?

Thats just it, there is nothing new either, they are just playing catch up right now...well siri is new and I am loving that feature...your own personal jarvis from iron man!

So with the announcement today I now have to make the decision on going back to the iPhone with the 4S or move to the Galaxy II S. The only disappointment for me with the iPhone announcement was that it still only has a 3.5" screen. I was really hopping for at least a 4" screen.
