NCAA Football 2009-10 Season

Give Cincy a little more credit. They beat Oregon St on the road, and the Beavers are now in the BCS Top 25. That counts as a quality win. In fact they have more wins over top 25 teams, 2, than Florida does, 1.

Come on, don't confuse the Cincy haters with facts. Have watched most of their games this season and have been very impressed by just how good they are.

Hey SEC apologistas - explain this: The Big East is ranked #1 in the RPI, if it existed for football.

This actually makes sense to me, due to:

1) The Big East playing a larger slate of OOC away games, which most conferences (and especially the SEC) shy away from.

2) The relative lack of cupcakes OOC for the Big East, compared to most BCS conferences

3) The relative lack of really bad teams in the Big East (Louisville and Cuse qualify this year)

RealTimeRPI.com College Football Power Ratings - A leading sports ratings and resources community on the Internet

1 Big East 8 46-24 (66%) 29-7 (81%) 50.38 41.99 1
2 Southeastern 12 70-41 (63%) 35-6 (85%) 48.10 39.85 2
3 Atlantic Coast 12 62-48 (56%) 29-15 (66%) 44.59 38.33 3
4 Big Ten 11 64-44 (59%) 30-10 (75%) 44.31 36.29 5
5 Pacific-10 10 50-39 (56%) 20-9 (69%) 44.09 37.47 4
6 Big 12 12 66-44 (60%) 35-13 (73%) 43.68 34.85 6
7 Mountain West 9 45-39 (54%) 21-15 (58%) 41.16 34.28 7
8 Independents 3 16-12 (57%) 15-11 (58%) 40.14 31.23 8
9 Western Athletic 9 40-41 (49%) 17-18 (49%) 35.56 28.51 9
10 Conference USA 12 49-59 (45%) 19-29 (40%) 32.80 26.03 10

And Sagarin has the Big East rated 4th. There's one thing that I've learned, you can make statistics say what ever you want.

CONFERENCE CENTRAL MEAN SIMPLE AVERAGE TEAMS

1 PAC-10 (A) = 79.63 78.92 ( 2) 10
2 SOUTHEASTERN (A) = 78.76 79.13 ( 1) 12
3 ATLANTIC COAST (A) = 76.53 76.33 ( 3) 12
4 BIG EAST (A) = 76.08 76.22 ( 4) 8
5 BIG 12 (A) = 74.04 74.66 ( 5) 12
6 BIG TEN (A) = 73.46 73.98 ( 6) 11
Here is what I do know.

  • Three straight national championships
  • 4 of the last 6 NC's
  • 5 of the 11 BCS NC's (next closest is Big-12 with 2)
And what exactly is an SEC apologist. Apology for what? Sorry for winning so much?

You read my follow-up post, right?

and no, before you ask, I'm not saying the RPI is perfect, or even that good.

Only reason I bring it up is because, with the way most of you speak about that conference, you would think ANY ranking would reflect that. Even a middle-of-the-road ranking would concur with what most yap on about here. But, how do you explain both a top ranking, and a top-ranked SOS?

Look at that gap between #4 and #5 in Sagarin. It's big. Big enough to say that the BE is free and clear of the lower 2.

and again, my main point is: If all we read were the Big East bashers, how could you justify us not being last, or even close, in nearly any ranking?

I think the Big East is better than the ACC and Big Ten (I know some that post here don't). I also think the SEC has earned the right to brag and think the Big East is nowhere near on par with the SEC.

Is it ME, or does it seem like the SECs referees are going out of their way to make sure EITHER Alabama or Florida gets a chance at the NCG?

1. The SEC has 12 teams.. The Big East has 8. So it makes sense the SEC plays more Conference games then OOC games.

2. Well the other big conferences like the SEC, Big 12 etc can add cupcakes and maintain a good SOS because there conference is so tough. With the big east and the acc and other smaller conferences they must schedule bigger schools to make themselves look better.

3. The SEC has one team this year that is "Really" bad. or a bottom feeder if you will and thats Vandy. and didnt some other SEC "Bad" Teams beat the Big East teams?

And as far as that ending ranking. When you put the ACC over the BIg 10 and Pac 10 and Big 12... You have no credibility.

...and when you don't read posts, and blabber on with some biased crap, you have none. Here - I'll make it easier to read:

1) The Big East playing a larger slate of OOC away games, which most conferences (and especially the SEC) shy away from.

The reason I posted that is because the RPI gives a "bonus" for away wins, for better or worse. I'm trying to explain it with relative facts, and not "our superior team would beat your inferior team" BS.

SEC teams play 8 conference games which leaves 4 OOC games. Many of those teams also have long standing OOC rivalry games that they play every year (Florida-Florida State, Georgia-Georgia Tech), so that really leaves 3 OOC games. Four of the conference games are at home, the OOC rivalry game may or my not be at home. Many of the SEC schools are also in smaller cities/towns which thrive off of home football game revenue. Those three extra home games bring many millions of dollars to the program/school/city. And like it or not, that's what the bottom line is...money. I wouldn't call it shying away, I would call it smart.

BTW, my team (Tennessee) is not one of those schools that shy away.
2010 @ Memphis
2011 @ UNC
2012 NC State in the Georgia dome
2013 @ Oregon
2014 @ Oklahoma
2015 @ UConn
2016 @ Nebraska
2019 @ Ohio State

The Buckeyes come to Neyland in 2018. I was just listing the away games.

Also saw where Cincy is coming to Neyland in 2011. Maybe we can settle some Big East/SEC disputes.

They play more OOC games by default. so of course they play more of them away then the SEC. Just based on the sheer number of OOC games..

Smaller schools love to play at these bigger stadiums in the SEC. After the FLA vs Charelston Southern game, the players in the interview were talking about what a great experiance it was to play in front of so many fans and be on tv.

I mean really the biggest stadium in the Big East, holds 65k.. and that only beats 2 teams in the SEC.. Vandy and M State. I mean people WANT to come to the SEC to play. People do not want to goto the Big East, you guys have to go to them.

I just wanna hurry up win the title and get this season over. Next Year FLA has a brutal schedule.

Alabama has a pretty tough schedule next year as well

9/4 SAN JOSE STATE
9/11 PENN STATE
9/18 at Duke
9/25 at Arkansas
10/2 FLORIDA
10/9 at South Carolina
10/16 OLE MISS
10/23 at Tennessee
11/6 at LSU
11/13 MISSISSIPPI STATE
11/20 GEORGIA STATE
11/26 AUBURN

Of course there are three gimmes there as well, at least we have Fla and Penn State at home.

There was an article in the most recent ESPN The Magazine about the Alabama-Georgia State game next year. It will be GSU's first football season. Head coach is Bill Curry.

USF beat FSU this year.. If they beat UF next year, it will be huge in their recruiting.. could it be a changing of the guard or will FLA just now have 4 "good" programs?

UofF next year will be questionable. I mean Brantley is good, but is he great? Can he lead FLA through the SEC?

So far some SEC teams don't look like they're shying away from anyone next year.
Florida-USF, Florida State
Alabama-Penn State
Tennessee-Oregon

Next season will also be tough for my Tigers:

LSU vs. UNC (@ Georgia Dome)
LSU vs. West Virginia
LSU vs. Tennessee
LSU @ Florida
LSU @ Auburn
LSU vs. Alabama

WV, Tenn, and Florida are all back to back.

Meh, this is not news. Some girl here said this a few days ago...
And the same thing is said about Notre Dame every few years.

Polls are nothing but popularity contests, which is why we need a 16-team playoff like every other NCAA football division from III up to I-AA.
