NBA Lockout thread

No NBA season, and no talks scheduled. The nuclear winter has begun. From where I stand, the players have absolutely no leverage here. They're going to have to move off their demands if they want to play in the USA.

i don't see the owners giving in with the 50/50 split issue among other things. definitely not with the revenue split.

I would tell them if they want a larger split, than we are going to a hard cap and non-guaranteed contracts.

Rey..don't be fooled. I WAS FOOLED..stating why won't the players agree to a 50-50 split.. Well, after reading a few articles and using a little common sense, it's easy to see why the owners gave in, a bit easy I might add to offering a 50-50 split. Because it is not really a an even split.

The problem is, the math is pretty complicated...and quite honestly, EVERYONE is bored with complicated math especially when it comes to millions and you nor I are getting any of it. Just google this: "operating expenses NBA". And you are gonna see a TON of the information that the fans either don't wanna see or don't care.

The place I found where they explain it according to the numbers provided by the NBA is this spot:

Taking a look at the numbers behind the NBA labor dispute « Wages of Wins Journal

They explain it in some pretty good detail where I understood it pretty good. And if I can, anyone can!;)

a Net Revenue split of 50/50 and that the owners curtail their spending to 2011 levels. This yields a stable business model for the owners but it does so by knocking player salaries down to $3.2 million per player on average from $5.2 million now (a 40% net drop and a steadily decreasing share of the pie over time).

You will have some folks in here stating "it's better than nothing"...but I am sure if someone came up to them and told them to take a 40% in revenue coming to you, REGARDLESS of who much money you make....you sure as hell would not like that drop.

They have to compromise somewhere, maybe the solidarity of the players will crack, and have 51% of them form a new union and agree to owner demands. Many players will be losing much more than their salares as sponsorship opportunities decrease if not dry up completely.

At some point, this season or next, can't the owners and the players who are willing to just move on?

Truth be told...forgetting bickering about accounting, what would happen if the owners offered the same 57/43 split the players have been receiving for years...but this time in their favor?

I'm surprised the owners did not go there, as the players have zero leverage in this situation.

Good points. But as stated before, maybe the players took advise from union head Billy Hunter when he addressed the union a little more than 2 years ago warning them this day would come and to "save their pennies". Maybe they have? Who knows?

When you see those animals shows and they show 2 male rams, ramming each other...this is exactly what it looks like. You never see them end. LOL! I wonder if the camera just gives up and goes away.... like maybe the fans will.

That was their initial offer.

The NBA owners never wanted to go north of 48.5 percent for the players’ share of the basketball-related income (BRI), league sources say, and commissioner David Stern had lean support when he pushed the most recent offer to 50 percent. There hasn’t been one source in ownership, in management, who believes the players will get that offer again – at least no time soon

The NHL had to miss an entire hockey season, but it came out a much stronger and more solid league after the lockout. Amongst other things, the hard cap saved the sport.

Of course they risked Bryant Gumbel saying it was all an NHL owners/players plan to keep the pucks from playing hockey, but it all worked out in the end...

Former NBA star Allen Iverson is set to host a two-day professional basketball tournament in Las Vegas.

Iverson is working with the Justice Entertainment Group on the four-team Las Vegas Superstar Challenge slated for Nov. 12-13 at the Thomas and Mack Center.

He is to appear at a news conference Wednesday to announce captains and players for each team.
Word is that participation in practices is optional.

You really believe that? I don't think so.

It was mentioned yesterday that 4 owners were against the salary cap: Mickey Aronson(Heat), Mark Cuban(Mavs), the Dolan family(Knicks) and Wyc Grousbeck(Celtics). There was owners like Paul Allen(who just quiting wanting to compete and more or less wants to sell the team...oh yeah, and poster boy for over spending owners and considered the richest of ALL professional sports owners - Blazers) and Dan Gilbert(Cavs...bought the Cavs franchise HIGH at approx. $375 million...team was worth almost a quarter of a BILLION when Lebron was there...now worth just under a million less than what he bought the team for) that have more of a personal reason than a business reason to have the cap....AND to tank the season.

Now it is widely considered that there will be more of a power struggle amongst the owners to get this done than the players. Do a google search on any of the names listed above and the select "news" and there of plenty of stories documenting this.

Interesting stuff.

The NBA plans to cancel two more weeks of its regular season, a source told the New York Daily News.

This would be the third time commissioner David Stern has postponed games as the league's lockout of the players continues. The NBA had previously canceled the preseason and the first two weeks of its regular season which was set to begin on Nov. 1.

According to the Daily News' source, this latest cancellation would total at least 102 games and run through Nov. 28.

I'm sure 30 different NBA owners have different opinions...and 360 different NBA basketball players also have different opinions. If somebody tells you either side is totally unified...they are lying.

The question will be which minority side will become a majority first.

Not sure if four NBA owners can persuade 26 other NBA owners to do anything, but I suppose you never know. The other side of the coin is what kind of movement there will be amongst the players when their November paychecks are not rolling in. Could be interesting.

For the record, there were also NHL owners who did not want to cancel the 2004-2005 season...INCLUDING James Dolan...but they canceled it anyway. And their league is much stonger now because of it.

I still say, personal feelings aside, I just don't see what leverage the players have here. As I said, they're lucky the NBA owners are not demanding 57/43 in the owners favor.

If that is true, I am very disappointed in Celtics ownership.

The owners mentioned above were gonna make money more than most. They do no want a hard cap because they WANT to spend and have no issues paying a "tax" to try to win. That is the supposed "new guard". They know that to make money, you gotta spend money.
