Huh?? I haven't seen or heard any racist comments from Stern or the owners during this mess, just Gumbel. This is a business, so you can't expect ownership to be 'hyping up' players during a labor stoppage like it's the NBA Finals or something....
Michael Wilbon too...
But the whole point is, that he did use it and it was obviously intentional.Wilbon basically says the same thing I said... he KNOWS what Gumbel is trying to say, but not sure HE would have used the analogy Gumbel used.
I think the last line of the commentary I posted on the previous page says it all:There is zero evidence that racism is tied to anything Stern had done. The NBA under Stern has been a pioneer in the advancement of minority coaching, and minority ownership.
So I'm really not sure what anyone could call Stern out on.

Let's just say in Stern's NBA there was never a need for a Rooney Rule and leave it at that.

For hiring, nope. There isn't a person that can complain there.
But point is though Wilbon stated he would use the same terms as Gumbel, he did not somewhat disagree with the point he was trying to make.

What did Wilbon say at the end?? He defended Stern by saying don't mistake arrogance for racism.Yes...and I agree. You insinuated Wilbon did not agree with his statement, he does to a certain extent.
Does anybody even know what point Gumbel was trying to make? I don't.

Gumbel's central mission here was to highlight Stern's patronizing, condescending style over the course of these negotiations. Among other things, Gumbel was offended by Stern saying union boss Billy Hunter was providing players with "inaccurate information.

Has Stern been arrogant and tough in his dealings with players?? Yes.
Have most commissioners in sports pissed off players over the years with their decisions?? Yes.
Some of the NBA players have claimed Stern is too strict and is too heavy-handed in dealing with conduct and lifestyle issues. They don't think Stern has the right to tell them to wear suits when sitting on the end of the bench. They don't think Stern has the right to make them stop producing music with obscene and degrading lyrics. Guess what?? He does.
I have conduct policies where I work that I must follow. Do I agree with all of them?? No. But I follow them if I want to be employed there. (And I don't make millions to play a game).
And to do that, Gumbel infers that Stern is a racist. Wow.Gumbel's central mission here was to highlight Stern's patronizing, condescending style over the course of these negotiations. Among other things, Gumbel was offended by Stern saying union boss Billy Hunter was providing players with "inaccurate information.
salsadancer7 said:Interesting....ok. Sounds like you are stereotyping there... And no, Stern cannot tell them they cannot make that type of music. He can FINE them, but he cannot force them.
And to do that, Gumbel infers that Stern is a racist. Wow.
Arrogant, condescending, sure. I know a lot of people like that, and they're not racist. I wonder if Gumbel thinks Roger Goodell is a racist too??
The case Gumbel tried to make against Stern was beyond weak. The only legs he had to stand on were his own perceptions. Our perception is this: Gumbel's central mission here was to highlight Stern's patronizing, condescending style over the course of these negotiations. Among other things, Gumbel was offended by Stern saying union boss Billy Hunter was providing players with "inaccurate information."
Gumbel was looking to turn some heads here. A measured, clever approach wouldn't seal the deal, so he dropped the bomb, turning over the race card on Stern.
This is absolutely no surprise. On "Real Sports" Gumbel once suggested Paul Tagliabue should show then-incoming NFL commissioner Roger Goodell "where he keeps Gene Upshaw's leash."
