NBA Lockout thread

And NOBODY is forcing the owners to pay Michael Redd and Gilbert Arenas more than Lebron, Wade, Dirk, Anthony and Paul....that was the choice the OWNERS made....aslo freely. And more than likely, because of those super intelligent contracts..the fans of THOSE teams where Gilbert and Michael Redd play, probably had to deal with a price hike as well as food and beverage.

But let's stop there. We agree to disagree.

You need to stop this. Going back and forth always getting the last word in and then saying let's stop there and agree to disagree. It is getting old.

Bryant Gumbel obviously thinks it's his job to make inflammatory racist comments every once in a while. He branded David Stern a 'modern plantation overseer treating NBA players like his boys'.

That's just outrageous and disgraceful. :(

All you have to do is go back and read the Memo that Bryant Gumbel wrote about his coworkers back when he was at the Today Show to know what kind of man he is. Thankfully someone at NBC leaked it to the press. He was hated by just about everyone at NBC. And later when he went to CBS , he was hated even more. I can't stand him.

She answered my post and I answered back. At no point has the discussion in this thread has been flamed. There are several points of this thread we have disagreed and this is one.

Michael Wilbon has also stated that he thinks there is some racial elements going on as well. I agreed with his point...but I disagree with Gumble here because the "boys" he is talking about never averaged $4 million a year.

You have old info...$5.15 million per year is the average NBA salary.

It's outrageous and sad for Gumbel to imply that this is a racial situation. It must be offensive for the many people who actually suffer at the hand of racism to listen to someone say these coddled athletes are being discriminated against.

Sandra

Actually, if you have seen "inside sports", it is one of the best sports news shows out there.
I would agree if the show's journalistic efforts broke stories or gave a unique perspective on issues, instead of relying on the ramblings of its host, which are clearly intended to spark outrage and increase ratings.

Let's ask Gumbel: Stern has no problem with these guys when there is a CBA in place. Why is it only racial while there are labor issues??

Here is Wilbons comments:

And there's always the complex and even more divisive element of race. Both the NFL and NBA are predominantly black. But the NFL has never been perceived as a "black league" because it has white megastars in players such as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning and coaches such as Bill Belichick. The NBA, on the other hand, has been perceived exactly as a black league for 30 years, even when it featured the likes of Larry Bird and Bill Walton. A championship team led by a blond, blue-eyed German, Dirk Nowitzki, isn't the same as having an iconic white American superstar on the level of Bird or Jerry West. Nor is a coach in the mold of Phil Jackson or Pat Riley.

And while every generation moves further away from stereotypes, more quickly in sports than just about any other industry, the fact is that NBA players with their guaranteed contracts and lavish lifestyles are the objects of derision much more often than their helmeted and more anonymous peers in the NFL -- who, except for those quarterbacks, make quite a bit less. And besides, people of any race and nationality more closely identify with people who look like them.

Obviously, you have not seen the show on HBO because they do. He does his OWN little "commentary" that strictly belong to him and him only....the show does not depend his commentary. There are tons of them in Youtube. I highly recommend them because they are very good. Believe me when I tell you, if it strictly about him, many, including yours truly, would not watch.

Yeah, so per Wilbon the 'black' league has the highest average salary...$5.15 million per player...of any league. But clearly Stern is racist.

Anyway, my comment referred to Gumbel's stupid plantation remark, not Wilbon.

Never mind...obviously you did not read the entire article because at no point did he stated or insinuate he was a racist.:facepalm

It's implied. Anyway, let's forget Wilbon's comments and refer to what I was ACTUALLY posting about...

Gumbel's comments. He did not imply. He said.

That he did...and I disagreed with his comments as I stated earlier.

Gumbel seems to have to say something stupid every once in a while. Remember his comments about Gene Upshaw when he was the head of the players union? Basically said Upshaw was Tagliabue's lapdog, and accused Upshaw of being in bed with the league and not doing the right thing for the union.

I cannot believe I am about to stick up for Gumble...but sorry Cosmo, that link had tons more to do with his political views than his views on sports. Irrelevant here because the comments coming from that link is from a conservative standpoint/view.

An though, I too am liberal, you just made me feel dirty for defending his right to his political viewpoint.

Thanks.... ;-p

While NBA commissioner David Stern and players' union executive Billy Hunter meet with a federal mediator in hopes of saving the NBA season, the league's top players are finalizing plans for a two-week exhibition tour during what would have been the first two weeks of the regular season, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

While the final details are still being worked out, more than a dozen of the league's best players are working to join forces on what would be a two-week, six-game, four-continent blockbuster tour, sources said.

In a trip that could resemble Team USA's takeover of the world stage at the 2008 Beijing Games, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Rajon Rondo, Blake Griffin, Russell Westbrook, Carlos Boozer, Paul Pierce and Kevin Love are among the players expected to participate. Kevin Durant and Kevin Garnett, among a few others, are also contemplating joining the tour.
