MLB 2013 Season

Read the article links that I and others have posted and they all list Grienke along with Kemp, Harriston, and Quentin as being ejected. All the talk shows say the same.

Again, not sure what blogs or immediate web posts you saw (even the L. A. Times blogger was unsure at the time), but as we've seen with breaking news, the media is quick to report inaccuracies. By this morning, many reputable sources I've seen do not indicate that Greinke was ejected:

Kemp and Hairston, along with Quentin, were ejected. Greinke left the game with injury to his non-throwing shoulder suffered during the melee.

Quentin, Kemp and Hairston were ejected. Los Angeles reliever Chris Capuano was given all the time he needed to warm up when play finally resumed after a delay of about 15 minutes, indicating Greinke left with an injury.

Shortly after the game the Dodgers announced that Greinke, who left the game after the brawl but was not ejected, suffered a broken left collarbone, with TV reports indicating he will be out a month.

There is one thing that all of the media is getting wrong. Greinke was not ejected. He left because he was injured. The trainer took him off the mound and into the dugout.

I was watching MLB Network last night shortly after the incident. They said Greinke had been ejected. In fact, they commented several times that it made no sense because he hadn't done anything wrong.

If that is the offical line score, then it may be correct and he may have been ejected. The crew chief is always credited with the official ejections.

Usually when the pitcher is ejected, the manager is also ejected. Mattingly wasn't ejected. Also, he went back to the mound and the trainer then took him away. Vin Scully kept repeating that Grienke left because he was injured. Since Capuanno was replacing an injured pitcher, he was allowed as many warmup tosses as he likes.

Then again, Scully is a little off at times. Old age will do that.

Here is something interesting. Out of the last 95 times that Quentin has been hit by a pitch, 4 of those pitches were actually over the plate and could have been called a strike.

The graph is a little confusing since Quentin is a right handed batter. Flip the image 180 degrees to get a better visual. Zero represents the middle of the plate, negative numbers are the inside pitches close to the batter, and positive numbers are pitches outside off the plate. So it may look like those pitches were outside since Quentin is a right handed batter, but the more negative represents the more inside the pitch is to the batter. -1 is the inside corner of the plate.

There are 14 other pitchers that have hit Quentin twice and 3 other pitchers more than twice. Greinke hitting twice already was not usual when it comes to Quentin getting hit by a pitch.

Here's another interesting stat, from Jayson Stark of ESPN:

Since 2008, Greinke has hit Quentin with a pitch three times in 31 plate appearances. That comes to one HBP every 10.3 trips to the plate. Greinke has faced 4,279 hitters not named Carlos Quentin in that span -- and hit just 19 of them. That comes to one every 225.2 trips to the plate.

Sounds like Joba Chamberlain/Kevin Youkilis, before they became teammates.

Also since that time Quentin has been hit by a pitch much more than any other player in baseball. Quentin has also been hit by several pitches more than once. He gets hit a lot because he is literally over the plate. Dominate pitchers will not be intimidated and will continue to pitch inside.

Update. Greinke will have to have surgery. Now he will be out 8 weeks minimum.

And Quentin said that he did not hear Greinke say anything. He said it was due to history.
