It's not Albert Pujols or C.J. Wilson, but is the addition of Mark Buehrle a good move by the Florida Fish?

Mark Buehrle, Marlins Agree to Four-Year, $58 Million Deal - Fish Stripes

Yep. The NL East is LOADED with real good left handed hitting and switch hitters. I am REALLY hoping they get either CJ Wilson and/or Gio Gonzalez. I would much rather have Gio for a few reasons...other than he is younger, he will be cheaper, being of Cuban family and local product AND a lefty...it would work out well.

also, from Olney:

Oh there is NO DOUBT that prevent him from signing with the Marlins. I think with the proximity of the D.R., the huge Dominican/Latin Market, the new stadium, the lack of state taxes(there it is again)...he wanted to come here. The team had met with MLB offices because to offset the lack of a no-trade clause, they offered him some kind of team ownership type deal and wanted to make sure that allowed in their contract. Now, whether is was or not, I do not know.

In the end, he got EVERYTHING he wanted: No trade clause, more money, HUGE Latin American market lead by a Latino owner, he can DH when the fielding skills diminish ... the only thing he didn't get was the no state taxes...but getting a contract for almost $40 million more than the Marlins offered will make up for it.

Hmmmm....wonder if he will be called a traitor NOW??!! LMAO! Like he was being called when there was a good chance he would sign with the Marlins....

That's nuts. They will regret it in about the 6th year.

The crazy thing is...he more or less gets a 'no trade clause' in year 6 because he would be a 10-5 player with veto rights. That is one of the things that was said the Marlins were trying to stress to his agent according to local sports down here.

Yeah, some of these signings remind me of what Michael Jordan said about owners signing players to bad contracts. The funny thing is you don't always know at the time what contracts are going to be bad, but the dollars being thrown around are crazy this year.

Some of these signings may definitely fall into that category down the road. Jeesh.

C.J. Wilson added to Angels' staggering haul

tweet0EmailPrintDALLAS – Left-hander C.J. Wilson(notes), the best of a thin class of free agent starters, on Thursday agreed to a five-year, $75-million contract with the Los Angeles Angels, according to multiple reports, putting an exclamation point on a day that began with the Angels grabbing Albert Pujols(notes) from under the noses of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Angels' spree temporarily even trumped the Miami Marlins free-agent gluttony that saw them dole out $191 million to Jose Reyes(notes), Mark Buehrle(notes) and Heath Bell(notes).

Pujols agreed to terms on a 10-year deal worth from $250 to $260 million, meaning the Angels cut loose about $320 million as everybody else was focused on the Rule 5 draft and checking out of the Hilton Anatole hotel. The Angels have a new TV deal with Fox close to being finalized, according to the Los Angeles, Times, which could explain where all the money is going to come from.

More From Tim BrownPujols agrees to terms with Angels on landmark deal Dec 8, 2011 Marlins will give Ramirez time to adjust Dec 7, 2011 So Wilson leaves the Texas Rangers, who with Wilson at or near the top of their rotation won consecutive AL West titles and both times advanced to the World Series. The Angels won three division titles and five of six before being overtaken by the Rangers.

A converted reliever, Wilson is 31-15 with a 3.14 ERA over the past two seasons. He'll join a rotation with Jered Weaver(notes), Dan Haren(notes) and Ervin Santana(notes) that with Wilson should be one of the best in the game.

The Marlins bid until the end, as has become their habit, though they're unaccustomed this week to losing out on players. They'd reportedly increased the term of their offer to Wilson to six years, though it seems Wilson, 31, was drawn by the prospect of returning to the old neighborhood.

He grew up not far from Angel Stadium, attending Fountain Valley High School, located 12 miles from the ballpark. He then pitched at Santa Ana junior college and Loyola Marymount University, all in Southern California.

The Angels – under new general manager Jerry Dipoto (this was his first major deal for the club) – were working to make up 10 games to the Rangers. Wilson's decision would appear to weaken the Rangers, who got 67 starts out of him over the past two seasons and nine more in the postseason.

The Rangers did appear to be readying themselves for such an outcome last month, when they signed Joe Nathan(notes) to be their closer and moved closer Neftali Feliz(notes) to the starting rotation, where he'll presumably join Colby Lewis(notes), Derek Holland(notes), Alexi Ogando(notes) and Matt Harrison(notes).

Wilson's regular-season acumen has not translated into the regular season. Over the past two Octobers, he is 1-5 with a 4.82 ERA in 10 games, nine of them starts. He pitched better in the past World Series, posting a 2.92 ERA over 12 1/3 innings, which covered two starts and a relief appearance.

Now would be a GREAT time for the Marlins to offer pissed off Hanely for power hitting lefty, Kendry Morales(1b and ALSO a local kid of Cuban family). Then send Gabby Sanchez to Oakland for Gio Gonzalez. Since the Marlins would not have a legit 3rd basemen, package a deal with Chris Volstad and Omar Infante to Texas for Michael Young. Then go hard after Cespedes. The team would look like this:

Fielding Line-up

c - Buck
1b - Morales
2b - Coughlan/Bonafacio
ss - Reyes
3b - Young
LF - Morrison
CF - Cespedes
RF - Staton

Starting pitching:

Josh Johnson
Mark Buerle
Anibel Sanchez
Gio Gonzalez
Ricky Nolasco

Hitting line-up

Reyes
Coughlin/Bonafacio
Morrison
Morales
Staton
Cespedes
Young
Buck

THAT line-up would be just as awesome as just about anyones in the NL.

WOW!! Trumped big bigger market and deep pocketed Angels!!

The Angels lay low and have not made a sound all off season, not even a hint. Then in one day they sneak up and land the best offensive player in baseball and one of the most sought after free agent pitchers.

The Angels probably feel they have been overlooked by some top free agents in the last few years. Looks like they're trying to make up for that now....

I cannot believe how many bandwagon Angels fans are now coming out of the dark again. The same thing happened after they won the World Series. I am sorry, but no self respecting Dodgers fan will ever jump on the Angels bandwagon simply because they land who is probably the best hitter of all time.

I am glad the Angels got him, even though the term is way too long, but this will not make me suddenly become and Angels fan.

Interesting notes:

Guaranteed money for Brady/Brees/Rodgers/Big Ben/Cutler/Romo/Newton combined equals apx $100 million which is less than the guaranteed money for Pujols.

Angels owner Artie Moreno paid Albert Pujols $254 million -- $72 more million than he bought his team for in 2003.

Yeah, but remember, who has a HIGHER chance of injury?

Moreno is something else! He is kicking the Dodgers' a$$ big time. But, I figure that once the Dodgers get their house in order...then IT'S ON! LOL!
