MLB 2011 Season

-Interesting stat from last nights Indians @ Red Sox Game: Last night's game set a record for most in attendance (38,477) at a Red Sox game since post WWII. That is just crazy to me. Not a Red Sox/ Yankees contest, but against the Indians? Cool.

You know, this is one stat I've never understood. All Red Sox games have been sold out for something like the last 8-10 years. You can't get a ticket. So how did last night's game set an attendance record?

You also hear this at college football games that are always sold out, NFL games, NHL games, etc. Every once in a while you'll hear of a new attendance record.

Attendance at Ranger games is always 18,200. You never hear that a new record of 18,201 was set...because they don't add seats!

I don't get it.

Perhaps the numbers in addition to actual seats that contribute to the attendance takes in consideration "standing room". They panned the crowd a few times and not only were all the seats filled, but there were people standing along the balcony's watching. It was absolutely packed! Too bad we sent all those Boston fans home sad with a loss. ;)

I heard that when Babe Ruth played his last game in Fenway Park, they roped off part of the foul areas for standing room and got about 40,000 there. Baltimore's Camden Yards has an area in right field that was designed to be standing area.

It's ironic that the record was set for a debut performance that had been forecast to be a potential train wreck. The scribes have not been kind to Eric Bedard.

I will defer to Bill or Cosmo here, but it seems like the standing room is always packed. Definitely every Yankee game, and most other games too. Could I have walked up to the game last night and bought a standing room ticket?

Yesterday afternoon, probably. But, it seems like the fluctuating number is due the suites and terraces. For some reason, those must have been packed last night.

The previous post-WWII mark was set earlier this year, 38,422 on June 21, 2011 against the San Diego Padres. Yep, the Padres...

That's what I mean...it just sounds arbitrary.

OK thanks to the Indians, the worst the Yankees can be once Sunday night's 8PM Yankee-Red Sox game ends (at about 2AM) is three games out.

This, of course, will be after the Sox give the Yankees their monthly b****-slapping this weekend! If Big Fat Papi didn't wake up the Yankees with what he did the last time these teams played, nothing will.

Hopefully Verlander can win twice in a five game series with the Red Sox and someone else can come through too, and the Yankee playoff season will be Red Sox-free!

A girl can dream, can't she? LOL some girls dream of diamonds, perfume, and Hawaii vacations. I dream of the Yankees beating out the Red Sox!

-Masterson seems out to prove the Red Sox made a mistake in trading him. Masterson raised his Fenway record to 10-2. He is 15-33 everywhere else. He is also 3-0 against the Red Sox.

I'm happy that he's doing well, by all accounts he's a great kid!

DREAM ON!! :p

Seriously, I'm really looking forward to this series. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the Yankees take two of three. I don't have the stats in front of me, but in the recent past (not just this year), the Yanks seem to play better at Fenway and the Sox better in the Bronx.

Standing Room Only

Teams are always looking for ways to put more people in the place !

Possibly ....

You do know that the opposition always returns any tickets that they don't use shortly before game time and those also become available, but those won't ADD to the count as they are already accounted for, but a potential for you to get a seat.

Yes, but the Sox have dominated the series of late.

That may be true of some of the collegiate sports, but I have a hard time believing that the Yanks or Red Sox for example would purposely make tickets available for the opposition fans...

ESPN.com's MLB video recap introduces the Red Sox/KC highlights under the banner, Lack-is-back, and touts his recent 4-0 record during which is ERA was under 3.00. Who in his right mind thinks Lack is back? In those four games he gave up 32 hits in just 23 innings, and the opponents were the three worst teams in the league, KC, Seattle and Baltimore, and Tampa Bay, a team that has been going backwards for nearly a month now. When I have time later tonight, I'll try to figure the batting average against him in those four wins, but I'm sure it was well above .300
.

32 hits in 23 innings would be .464 ...

Your seat-of-the pants methodology is erroneous. You counted the number of outs per inning pitched againts as the number of at bats, but to that, you must add the hits plus the times a batter reached on an error, and then subtract the number of sacrifice flys and double plays. Phew. Last night, KC went 11 for 29 against him, for a batting average of .373. The other three games are not quite a bad, but almost as bad.

ESPN.com has saved me the work of doing the arithmetic::

The Red Sox will start John Lackey (9-8, 6.23), who is 4-0 with a 3.41 ERA in his last five. Opponents are still batting .299 against him in that stretch, and he gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings in Monday's 9-6 loss to Cleveland.

Looks like I was off by a point.;)

Upon further review, the ESPN calculation includes Lackey's next game in which Cleveland hitters averaged .296 (8 for 27), so in the previous four, he might have batted .300 on the nosey!:D

Lackey has a no-hit shutout through two innings... just like last game. His ERA has dropped from 6.23 to 6.11. If he throws two more shutout innings, it drops below 6.00! On the other hand...

Red Sox leading 7-2 through four. How long will the Red Sox hang with Lackey if he keeps getting hit?

Instant update: Fifth inning, three pitches, three baserunners, one run in. Lackey at 89 pitches. Aceves loosening up. Stay tuned

Inning over, Lackey has thrown 100 pitches while qualifying for the victory. I think 100 pitches constitutes a plausible, face saving pitch count number...

I have seen my 2nd straight night of Marlins vs. Cardinals and I know they have scary 3-4-5 hitters in Boston, Yankees and Philly...but I just don't know anything scary than Puhols, Bergman and Holiday.
