For the life of me, I have no idea why Manny Acta is so hellbent on yanking his starting pitchers so early in the games! David Huff was rolling, until he got yanked in the 6th. Then errors and the bullpen blew the lead. Close game though. Would've been nice for Huff (just sent down to the minors to make room for Jimenez) to squeak one out against Beckett.
On a side note to last night's game: Kevin Youkilis could have cost the Sox a W last night because of his insistence on arguing any call that doesn't go his way! The Sox are just lucky that Youk's spot in the order didn't come around again, after he got ejected.
First, the call could have gone either way. To me, it was not an obvious swing. Second, Gerry Davis is known to have a quick hook. Youk complained about the call, but did walk straight to the dugout. He didn't get ejected until after he got to the dugout.
Wakefield is going for his 200th win tonight and whenever he gets it, he will set a record as the oldest player to do so. A couple games ago, after he had rung up his career 2,000th strikeout, the manager left him in for one more inning than he should have, just to get him one more standing ovation, and he got it... after surrendering three singles and a grand slam to the four batters he faced. The Sox lead 2-0, and if Wakefield completes five innings with a safe cushion, look for him to get the hook this time.
So your saying he can't pitch well enough to go 7 or 8 ?
There's a saying that you never want a knuckleballer pitching for you and you never want one pitching against you. Wakefield's job is to eat innings and keep the other starters on their schedule, so once he had a big lead after six, he should have been pulled in favor of Aceves, and since the manager doesn't want egg on his face again, if he has a big lead after five or six tonight, he will have earned his applause and early shower.
If they can keep his pitch count down tonight, he'd be available to bail out Lackey in long relief Saturday, or Miller on Monday.
And tonight, he has a no-hitter through three innings.
