Just saw the replay ....

Are you Kidding Me ?

He was out by 2 feet.

Then again, after looking at the view from the 1B side, look closely, did he actually tag him, or not ?
He may have been tagged on the leg, maybe not.
He may have Ola 'd it and NOT touched him at all with the hand that has the ball.

They should be able to look at all this type of stuff in the replay booth. (or under the tunnel as it may be).

What does the rule say ?
Do the players have to just make contact ?
I saw a shot from the outfield, with a close up on the play and he may have NOT actually tagged him.
However this is one that would be called out 99 out of 100 because it's close.

It does look like he possibly got him on the leg, if not, he missed him.
You make the call.

Jimbo...the umpire is not on the 1st base side. The play is right infron of him, 2 feet away if not closer.

I disagree. While wrong, at least the Galarraga play was relatively close and didn't decide the outcome of a game.

This one did.

I will disagree. The Galarraga play was not close. And though this play will be forgotten in a couple of days....the flub by the umpire will not and it is still mention now and then.

I said 'relatively close'.

Take a look again at Lugo's reaction. He was as shocked to be called safe as everyone else...

To me it looks like the tag was made but I think what hurts the umps (Deals) case of calling him safe is how much the throw had Lugo beat. The worse call of all time? I don't know I can think of another couple of horrible calls in a WS that to me are worse because of the stage.

Terrible call. Especially with the throw beating him by that much and the call determining the outcome of a 19 inning game. Ump must've had a hooker lined up or something for that night and was thinking he could still get in on it.

Oh well...the life of a Pirates fan is never easy. Let's go Bucs!

“I saw the tag, but he looked like he oléd him and I called him safe for that. I looked at the replays and it appeared he might have got him on the shin area. I’m guessing he might have got him, but when I was out there when it happened I didn’t see a tag. I just saw the glove sweep up. I didn’t see the glove hit his leg.”

Meals screwed up, just like Joyce did last year when he stole a perfect game from Armando Galarraga(notes) with a blown call. Joyce’s life changed that day. Immediately reviled, he soon found comfort in the embrace of the legions of baseball fans who saw his contrition the night of his blunder – his tears, his vulnerability, his fallibility. Jim Joyce was each of us. He biffed one. He felt miserable. He used the support of others to move past it.

Like I said....this terrible call will soon be forgotten...Joyce's mistake STILL lives...

Maybe not...

Pirates president Frank Coonelly issued a statement Wednesday, a day after his team's 4-3 loss to the Braves in Atlanta that included a highly controversial call in the 19th inning.

In doing so, Coonelly and the Pirates filed a formal complaint with the commissioner's office over umpire Jerry Meals' call that ended the game at Turner Field.

"The Pittsburgh Pirates organization is extremely disappointed by the way its 19-inning game against the Atlanta Braves ended earlier this morning. The game of baseball and this game in particular, filled with superlative performances by players on both clubs, deserved much better."

"While we cannot begin to understand how umpire Jerry Meals did not see the tag made by Michael McKenry three feet in front of home plate, we do not question the integrity of Mr. Meals. Instead, we know that Mr. Meals' intention was to get the call right. Jerry Meals has been umpiring Major League games for 14 years and has always done so with integrity and professionalism. He got this one wrong."
....

MLB Executive VP of Baseball Operations Joe Torre says it appeared to him that umpire Jerry Meals missed the call at the end of the Pirates-Braves game.

I agree with Posnanski's assessment of the Meals play:

Which leads to this: Baseball absolutely should institute replay, and I say this as someone who doesn’t particularly like replay in sports. They should institute replay because it’s just not sustainable in today’s technological world to make bad calls on the field. Those days are over. This year, more than any other, television broadcasts are using boxes to show whether pitches are actually balls or strikes. This year, more than any other, camera angles are consistently (on a daily basis, really) showing that umpires missed calls. This year, more than any other, the social media world blows up when an umpire misses a call. And it’s only going to get more and more obvious and destructive until baseball will no longer have the sort of legitimacy that a sport needs. I’m not saying that baseball should use replay. I’m saying that baseball will have no choice. They will either find a way to incorporate replay into the fabric of the game, or they will have replay thrust into the game in some haphazard way, much the same way drug testing was thrust into the game. You can’t keep giving the fans at home better access to the truth than the home plate umpire. You just can’t.

Replay would have helped Jerry Meals more than anyone else on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. He would have had the freedom to make the call he believed in, and then when looking at the replays he (I assume) would have overturned it. Yes, it would have added a bit of a delay to the game. Yes, replay would change some of the rhythms of baseball. But baseball needs to decide: What’s more important, getting it right, or the inconveniences of progress?

I'm watching the Braves & the Pirates tonight. I just wonder if the ump was tired last night & just wanted to end the game. It was just a long game & a long night. Anyway, last night they had a very vocal Pirates fan. I don't know how old she is(maybe anywhere from 8 to 12 years old),but you could hear her last night yelling "Let's go pirates." They say she's back for tonight.

You must mean the "Let's go Pirates!" girl. She was pretty funny...and I'm sure annoying as hell to anyone next to her. :D

She wasn't happy with that last call either.
