I'm just going to disagree. The Padres will always build their team around pitching because Petco is such a huge pitcher's park.

Sandra

That's fine and I do not disagree. They also have very little money, so that plays into MORE than the it being a pitchers park...IMHO.

You can finesse numbers to make them show just about anything you want so I go by wins & loses.

I not trying to prove anything by the post. I was just pointing out how bizarre this game is. I mean you cannot finesse wins and loses all the time. Look who won last years Cy Young, Felix Hernandez ...what was HIS record? Yep, a more the mediocre 13-12.

About going by "wins and loses", can't always say that either. I mean look at the NFL. The Cardinals a couple of years BARELY get in the playoffs with a 9-7 record and almost won the Super Bowl. My Raiders last year went undefeated in the AFC West..and didn't make the playoffs.

Sometimes, things just don't add when it comes to the games we love.

A very wise man once told me, "Figures don't lie,but a liar can figure"

Oh, I know. Lots of odd things this season for some reason. The Reds were as of last week the top scoring team in the majors, but they also gave up a crap ton of runs too.

Numbers don't lie but they should not be the end all of all discussions.

About two minutes ago, I started to compose a post asking whether Tim Wakefield, who was rolling along with an 11-3 lead in the seventh inning, should be pulled now, having just given up three straight singles to load the bases, but before I could even finish it, Brendan Ryan, he of the 1 homer in 320 at-bats level of ineptness, hit the first pitch thrown to him for a grand slam. Ken Beatrice used to call Red Sox manager Darrell Johnson the best barn door locker in all of baseball, but I'd have to say that Terry Francona could give him a run for his money. Wakefield now gets to take his shower.

The good news is, Wakefield will still probably wind up getting his 199th career win.

Meanwhile, when does Reddick turn back into a pumpkin? He's hitting .362 and slugging .628 in 94 at-bats. This guy is not a phenom. He hit .230 in Triple A this year and .266 there last year. Players typically hit 30 points LOWER in the majors than they did in Triple A. I'd love to see him keep it up, but if he plays every day, he'll finish the season closer to .280, which is still a big improvement over Nancy Drew.

They should have his eyes checked .....

Lights are much better in the Big Leagues, maybe he needs a prescription changed. :)

When the Sox called up Reddick for a cup of coffee in '09, I said then that he reminds me of Trot Nixon. A solid- not great- all around player. If the Sox give him a full time job, I can see him as a .275/16/70 type player.........very Nixon-esque.

Word is that Drew may be put on the DL later today. Something about an "impingement in the left shoulder"...

I can't wait to see the "highlights" of the Red Sox/Royals game. I'm following it by its box score. Pinch hitter Drew Sutton laid down a sacrfice bunt with runners on first and second, and he wound up on third base due to an "error at third base". That must have been a doozie of an error. I'm guessing that the throw to third ricochetted of someone or something and dribbled slowly into the dugout, slowly enough that Sutton had rounded first by the time it left the field of play. Otherwise. the left side of the Fenway Park ballfield just isn't big enough for a ball to get far enough away for even Jesse Owens to leg it all the way around to third base on an error.

The Red Sox are batting .500 (13 for 26) through five innings. Strange season for all of baseball. Offense is down from last year by more than half a run a game, yet we seem to be having a lot more of these spectacular, high scoring games. How many hits did Texas get yesterday or the day before? 27?

That play didn't make the lowlight film, but upon further contemplation, I now realize that the ball probably reamined in the field of play and was next thrown home in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the middle baseruner from scoring.

The Atlanta Braves-Pittsburgh Pirates game ended after 19 innings on a controversial call by the umpire at home plate. Listen,I'm a Braves fan,but even I find it hard to believe that the ump called Julio Lugo safe at the plate for the Braves to win.

Just saw the replay ....

Are you Kidding Me ?

He was out by 2 feet.

Then again, after looking at the view from the 1B side, look closely, did he actually tag him, or not ?
He may have been tagged on the leg, maybe not.
He may have Ola 'd it and NOT touched him at all with the hand that has the ball.

They should be able to look at all this type of stuff in the replay booth. (or under the tunnel as it may be).

What does the rule say ?
Do the players have to just make contact ?
I saw a shot from the outfield, with a close up on the play and he may have NOT actually tagged him.
However this is one that would be called out 99 out of 100 because it's close.

It does look like he possibly got him on the leg, if not, he missed him.
You make the call.

There was no controversy...it was an absolute terrible call.
