Sounds like the Pirates but I still think they need one or two power bats to be successful.Adequate starting pitching and a dominant bullpen will make up for mediocre offense.

Since participating in the Home Run Derby, Adrian Gonzalez is 2-for-24 and David Ortiz 1-for-13.
There are people who believe the HRD screws up some players' swings....

Gonzo is 2 for 2 so far today.... :up
News: Miller took his first loss of the season getting battered for seven runs (all earned) on five hits, walking five, and not recording a strikeout, while lasting just 2.2 innings in a 9-6 loss to the Rays Friday night. (Fri Jul 15)
Spin: While he is 3-1 on the year, with a 5.68 ERA he has again been quite a disappointment to those who had hoped for great things. The Red Sox offense will continue to get him chances to win as long as he remains in the rotation...
Another adequate, if uneven, performance by Red Sox reclaimation project Andrew Miller, bringing his record in six starts to 4-1. He lasted 5.2 innings today and, miraculously, allowed only 2 earned runs.
Here is what ESPN's page on Miller had to say about him before the game today:
FANTASY BASEBALL
Stupid "Spin". Going into today, Miller had four good starts and one stinker. Do you project his ERA by simply extrapolating 5.68 runs per game? In his first four starts, he gave up 3, 1, 2 and 3 earned runs while going long enough to qualify for the decision in all four of them, and then he had one stinker. Or do you project that if he went 3-1 in five starts, then he'd go 18-6 in 30 starts? Well. today, he pitched 5.2 innings and gave up only 2 earned runs. This guy would have to pitch three stinkers in a row to lose his spot in this rotation, even if Buchholz returns. He hasn't been a disappointment to anyone except to Fantasy Baseball dweebs who care more about numbers than about performance. Does anyone know what the terms of his contract are?
Left-hander Andrew Miller's minor league deal with the Red Sox, which would pay the pitcher $1.3 million if he is in the majors, includes a team option for 2011. Notably, according to a source familiar with the deal, that option vests if Miller is assigned to another team, a clause that is meant to help ensure that the left-hander remains with the Sox if he is added to the major league roster and then needs to be sent back down to the minors, thus exposing him to waivers. A team could not claim Miller off of waivers unless it was willing to also become responsible for his salary in 2012.
"As excited as I was when I got traded here when I got the opportunity, I think I’m more excited now because of the way that my contract is structured," Miller said. "My contract is unique. ... There’s even some language in my contract so they can keep me if they send me down at some point, or they have a good shot at keeping me. It just seemed like the right fit."

I would go by the ole "what have you done for me lately" thinking. I liked him when he was a Marlin and was really pulling for him.
"Funny game"#2... The Padres starters have an ERA of 3.50+, bullpen ERA was just announced at 2.80....very good among all major league teams...and coming into this series, they had the least amount of wins in all the National League.

Playing at Petco has something to do with the Padres stats...both their pitching and their offense. HUGE pitcher's park.
Sandra
I would not put much stock into the playing at Petco thing.
I would not put much stock into the playing at Petco thing. The home run is not the only way to score runs. They also lead the Majors in stolen bases...The have the 3rd best ERA in ALL of baseball on the road, 3.47. Only Texas at 3.16 and the Yankees at 3.25 are better. At home, they are the 4th best at 2.94.
.."funny game" fact #4, the Padres have a better hitting average with 2 outs and runners in score position(.231) than the following teams that have BETTER records:
Giants(.183)
Yankees(.219)
Indians(.216)
Pirates(.223)
Rays(.207)
Angels(.230)
Rangers(.229)
Blue Jays(.223)
D-Backs(.230)
But tied for 24th with 4 other teams in total runs scored with only 112 after 2 outs and runners in scoring postition....and 2nd to last in total runs scored with 339.
