It's a bounce week too, with Spidey coming out more BD sales should be expected due to the initial release of a (whether we like it or not) popular franchise. It's going to be hard to get a good pulse on the software trends with the titles being released over the next several weeks.

Walmart not included.

I agree because people like me bought a movie with the $98 player, BUT i feel things are going back to normal. Just looking at movie sales it'll be hard on HDDVD fighting the PS3 factor, AND the PS3 is selling well now.

Transformers would have hammered ALL kinds of records if it woulda been available on both.

I think these numbers will be back to the 65/35 until Bourne 3 comes out. I just don't feel Rat or Shrek 3 will make that big of a dent(especially since they are going against each other), but maybe Im wrong.

There's a week's difference between Shrek and Rat release. But yes, HD-DVD didn't have anything that week.

The Top Ten selling titles:

Some surprises, for me anyway - Transformers in its 3rd week and the comedy Chuck & Larry in its 1st week beat out SM Trilogy. And Knocked Up came back out of nowhere. Sounds like some Wal-Mart shoppers have been buys shopping for discs to play in their new High-def players. ;)

Im not too surprised at Transformers, I bought it with my $98 A2 :D

Another 2 to 1 week, no shock there. I think with the Toshiba's selling well and the PS3 selling better, we wont see much of a change.

Knocked Up didn't come out of nowhere. Knocked Up was reduced to $20 at Amazon and Best Buy -- the two largest sellers of high def. Combo pricing is what drives everyone nuts. The reliability is an issue, but not the epidemic many make it out to be. They reduced a 2 month old title to the catalog pricing that it should be (*cough* Fox and Sony pay attention) and sales took off. This is essentially what happened when old titles like Casino Royale and Pirates of the Carribean took off during the week Transformers debuted on HD-DVD.

Chuck and Larry did not so great in terms of sales but was tops on rental for both HD-DVD and SD DVD. (*cough* Blockbuster lost out in stupidity once again.) Ratatouille wasn't the home run on high def many thought it would be because it DOESN'T PLAY IN THE MINIVAN!

I would like to see the top discs in terms of revenue not just unit sales. "Planet Earth" probably dwarfs *EVERYTHING* out there.

The official results are not out yet, but unofficial reports are that it's 66:34 in favor of Blu-ray for the week of 11/18. I will post when the official results are out.

Presumably because of the Thanksgiving holiday last week, HMM didn't publich the Top 10 titles for the week as they normally do. Instead, they gave us a summary of the Top 10 High-def titles for 2007, through Nov. 11:

hd11-18-07-top10.jpg

Which matches up pretty well with a presentation the BDA made at a conference in Japan a few weeks back, providing actual sales numbers for the Top 10 selling titles through Oct. 21:

bd1_3.jpg

- except that in the Nov. 11 ratios, Transformers has moved up to the #2 title, 300 HD DVD moved up to #3, and Casino Royale slid down from #2 to #4; all other titles remained in their same position.

The titles must have sold a few thousand more copies each in the 3 week between Oct. 21 & Nov. 11, but it would still seem safe to assume Spiderman 3 has sold less than 63,000 copies to not be included in the Top 10. And, sure enough, Dave Vaughn of Home Theater Spot - who has access to the actual Nielson reports - posted in the AVSForum today:

Dave Vaughn said:
I have seen the actual numbers and you guys and your math numbers are pretty good. SGRSBSKIER is correct about the SP3 number...it hasn't yet sold 62,900 copies.

What is interesting, the top 10 titles reflect the same 2:1 ratio with relatively high accuracy: 305:150.
I never thought a movie like 300 can account for 1/3 of all HD/BD discs sold over a year (150/450).

Diogen.

I think what would make those numbers even more interesting would be sales per day or week since release. Unless I'm overlooking something, Transformers number is amazing considering how long the rest of the titles have been out. If I get bored I'll do the math later, but I think it speaks well to the HDDVD owner's commitment to their format and/or new purchasers.

Lookiing at the 11/11 YTD and the 10/07 YTD figures for the top 2 BD titles:

300 BD / 100.00 / 243,400
CRoyale / 51.83 / 126,154

Plugging in the the YTD ratio of 10/21 and putting the ratio from 11/11 shows a nearly identical sales ratio. This would seem to indicate that BOGO sales took attention away from the best sellers, and there was stagnation, not a surge, for the top titles for BD. Meanwhile by comparison the YTD numbers for the top 2 HDDVD titles outpace the 10/21 outlook given their ratio and position (both less than 50%, now both above).

What's screwy is that the Nielsen numbers are by units sold, not revenue.

Expensive box sets like "Planet Earth" cost *at least* 3 times what any of the movies on that list cost.
