High Def Disc unit sales - The Digital Bits

Except for the huge dropp off from the ultra wired in like myself that are putting off HD disc purchases now.

I'm back to standard DVD until a combo player comes out that can handle BD-J as well as HD DVD. Should be Labor Day by then.....

As this concludes and moves toward one format. I beleive the pissed off HDDVD guys are gonna be outweighed by new BD adopters.
I am not too worried, and neither is the BDA from their comments.

I personally am going to keep enjoying my HDM.

This report shows Blu-ray outselling HD DVD about 5.6 to 1. No doubt the largest part of this is due to the Warner announcement, and the perception that Blu-ray has won the HD format war. But part must be attributed to the relatively weak slate of HD DVD releases. In fact, the entire first quarter of 2008 seems to favor Blu-ray, as far as the strength of releases is concerned.

Interesting posts I've read elsewhere:
"If HD DVD outsells Blu-ray in the next 3 months, Warner will switch back."
"Sweeney Todd will save HD DVD."

Kinda makes you wonder how blind we can become by our emotions.

There have been comments that Warner believed the format war was not only holding back High Def Media, but was also depressing standard DVD sales. It will be interesting to see if DVD sales recover or even flatten out, and how quickly Blu-ray sales take off. There are anecdotal reports of spot shortages of Blu-ray players, especially around Miami.

The rest of January should be quite interesting.

DVD sales is more a result of the economy than the HD war, copout IMO.

Edit: as for sales, I don't think this is a huge surprises, certainly reflects the uncertainty, though I'd expect this to be the low point for the next couple months while people re-invest into both formats, both for feeling as if they've picked the winner, and also for those who don't care if their horse has been declared dead at the line, and are getting movies they want to see now. Especially if it triggers any retail exclusivity over the next month or two and we have inventory fire sales.

I will save Verbano the effort:

Seems to be a trend developing here?

Watch out HD-DVD went from 15 to 17 a 13% jump in sales, BD slipped from 85 to 83 a 2% drop, at this rate HD-DVD will be ahead of BD by the time Warner is about to drop, this will convince Warner to drop BD!

Nah, a lot of people purchased HD-DVD players for Groundhog's Day presents. As soon as those HD-DVD players are opened there will be a huge surge in HD-DVD disc sales. :p

You failed to mentioned all the buy a TV and get a free player deals. Selective wording in post seems to be an epidemic around here.

I'm not so sure just how "free" those players are considering you're paying Best Buy's or Circuit City's retail price for the TV to get the $400 BD player. If the same TV was bought online, even at a major e-tailer like Amazon, you're paying AT LEAST $300-$400 less for the smallest sized TV eligible for the promotion.

I've been doing some serious price comparison this past month as I am shopping for a new TV, and since I already have a PS3, I'd prefer to save the money and buy online. I think when the "free" BD player is no longer part of the promotion, you'll see the prices of those same TVs begin to drop substantially at BB and CC.

TV prices drop all the time so I'm not sure that factors into this conversation. Since when doesn't Amazon have the cheapest prices. I can't remember making a major electronics purchase when the price wasn't cheaper on Amazon. Add the fact there is no tax why wouldn't BB cost more, I'm not sure I respect your point. The only reason I buy from BestBuy is I have their CC, get reward zone points, and no interest on major purchases.

Also I defered over $600 no interest on my $2000 TV purchase on my BB card by paying it off in the alloted time. I think that more then makes up for the cost of a throw in BD player.
