High Def Disc unit sales - The Digital Bits

I understand, I dont think at this point you'll see better than 3 to 1. pirates selling 100 to 12 against the highest HD title is great week none the less.

What the heck is the big surge with planet earth again anyways?

Good point.

Planet Earth = people buying more expensive sets as Christmas presents, when they wouldn't buy them normally, IMO.

That sounds more believable than people in the UK buying PE on HD DVD since it's region free (as posted elsewhere). Especially considering how small the HD DVD market is in the UK.

On another site, folks pointed out that Planet Earth (DVD) is on Oprah Winfrey's list of "Favorite Things". Hard to beleive that would have that much effect (but Obama is probably hoping for that much effect :p). But, as you can see in the Top 10 titles, the PE BD is doing pretty well too.

I remember seeing that now. Oprah has a lot of sway, her book club pushed many books to the top.

PE is no doubt the most amazing nature doc series ever filmed in HD, but I just can't imagine owning it while it remains in heavy rotation on the HD Theater channel.

You must have D*. If you had Dish, you would get sick of the downrezzed macroblocking.

It was the first thing I bought before I bought any movies or pr0n, I bought "Planet Earth" and "Digital Video Essentials" along w/ my A20.

PE is definitely reference material and a great way to show off a new system, especially if the broadcast signal doesn't quite cut it.

I actually have cable (Cox) and since they only carry about a dozen national HD channels, there isn't a whole lot of choice in what I watch in HD. But fortunately the PQ is quite good and they've just added HBO HD On Demand and next Jan. 15 they're promising 13 new HD channels.

If you want to see how big the difference is between Cable/Satellite and BD/HD DVD borrow a copy and look at PE.

I'm sure you're right and probably spoke too soon about why someone would want to own PE.

I'm definitely already seeing the difference between BD and cable HD watching movies. Since getting my PS3 six weeks ago, I've upgraded my Netflix sub and am neglecting all the movies on my DVR I recorded off HBO HD. Next time my cable co. raises prices, I'll be tempted to drop HBO and resort to broadcast HD for sports, network shows, and an occasional documentary.

Well, the official figures come out tomorrow, but it's being widely reported that Blu-ray won again, 61-39. Blu-ray has won what, 52 straight weeks in a row? So much for Bourne; so much for Potter.

And it was a BOGO week for HD DVD.
