I just had the genie upgrade and my wife forgot to tell the installer about one of the wall outputs. The installer just used a two way splitter outside but I really need three. Will this splitter work out side?

Amazon product ASIN B00BW60R68

Just FYI the installer is only supposed to connect those cables that have DirecTV boxes attached to them.....anyway yes that splitter will work. Remember though you are limited to eight tuners in total and the Genie is already using five.....

What it is ........we move the furniture around in the room from time to time and the other wall outlet is used when the receiver moves to the other side of the room. I only have two tuners.

Well, I figured it out.... I need a 8 way wide band splitter because it has two DC power pass connections.............

You can use the 8 way (make sure it's SWM) ...
This allows room for expansion in the future.

Remember like Texbrit said, you are only allowed 8 tuners total, with the Genie being 5.
If you need more tuners, you'll need a different splitter.

Just so I dont blow something up....... it seems that the swm splitters have a dc pass port which the main genie connects to.....I just wanted to have two dc powered pass ports so when I move the reciever to the other side of the room, I wont need to go outside and switch cables.

In other words, one of the two connected dc power ports wont be used by the genie reciever........

The power passing port is for the power inserter, not the Genie. If the power inserter is behind the Genie, then you can move it to before the splitter and then you won't have to worry about it being on the power passing leg of the splitter.

Ah Ha.......I can leave the power inverter where it is...has long as I have it plugged in and power out to the LNB`s.

The Genie receiver doesn't need the power inverter to receive the signal from the LNB`s.....so I can just use a 4 way splitter and have three jacks connected (only two are used and the same time) I just need to keep the power inverter plugged in to the power out on the splitter all the time.

The Genie IRD really doesn't need the PI.....DTV just made it a convenience to be able to power the LNB`s and send a signal to the IRD at the same time with the PI in line.

please correct me if I`m wrong...............

Thanks guys for the help to understand the new tech.......

My guess is the new SWM LNB`s needs more voltage to work unlike the older type that needed very little voltage.

Not necessarily. The old lnbs used to take their power from the receivers, from the signalling system used to select the satellite you wanted. with SWM, there is no voltage-based signalling system.

The receiver supplies either 13 or 18 volts to the legacy lnbs. The swm lnb requires at least 21 volts.

Yes, but I don't think that was the reason. They could almost certainly have designed the LNB to use 13v or 18v if they had wanted to. They used 21v because they did not have to conform to the existing 13/18v scenario, and 21v gives them the ability to operate over longer cable runs anyway.

Yes, and you can use the 29 volt power inserter with the swm lnb, too.

I have an issue sorta with the statement earlier that you don't need the PI for the Genie to work. (post 8 I think.)

"The Genie receiver doesn't need the power inverter to receive the signal from the LNB`s."

If the Genie doesn't have the PI, it doesn't get signal to the LNB.

I think what he meant is that the power inserter doesn't supply voltage to the Genie, but to the lnb.

Yes, the PI supplies power out to the lnb`s. DIRECTV made it a convenience to include a "out to tv" connection on the PI for video signal.

If I leave the PI plugged in (power out to lnb) the receiver can be connected else where in the line, via "splitters".
