Dish messing with Voom, All are now HD-Lite 1280x1080i: Discuss this issue HERE!

Does anyone know if E* will be carrying National Geographic HD? Also, does E* still allow people to sign up for their service, but only subscribe to the HD channels?

NG HD is not yet on the air. I haven't heard any plans yet of anyone picking it up. Yes, you can subscribe to the HD only as long as you own the equipment.

NG HD would be a great one to have. Like Sean said, Dish hasn't said anything about launching but I don't see Dish passing this one up for long.

I believe in the future we will see some of the less popular channels in a lower resolution such as the shopping channels and channels in the 9000's that are required by law to be broadcasted such as the learning channels.

Wasn't there a bill drafted that would require satellite and cable companies to transmit locals in their original format from the source? If not then they could transmit the less popular ones in a lower resolution as well. By doing this that would be like them compressing the current SD stations today.

Can we have a similiar Campaign for Directv HDlite channels ?
I think it may be a little too late in the game; it was consent by silence. Other Forums censored its members and were quite successful at convincing them HD-Lite wasn't like kissing your ugly sister at all...it was just a matter of acquired tastes; besides... most HDTVs don't know the difference anyway.

The only way DirecTV subscribers will ever get rid of HD-Lite: (IMO)

1. E* continues to provide customers full bitrate HD (1920x1080i and 1280x720p)
2. D* subscribers terminate their subscription and sign up with E* or Cable
3. D* subscribers actively voice their displeasure like E*/VOOM HD Pak members did here on the Dish Network Forum.

Of course, I wouldn't kick up your heals about HD-Lite at some of those other sites since you are bound to be ridiculed by Admins who will modify and/or delete your posts.

Speaking of new HD, Isnt MHD, MTV's new HD channel, supposed to launch in early January, around CES time too?

Not that it would be terribly high on my wish list, but seems like I read the launch was coming soon.

Yeah MTV in HD like we need to see aston kutcher in HD punkin someone. And the music they play on there is pretty non mainstream (what music they do play) I wish that CMT would launch a HD channel and do HD music videos that would be cool oh and Im not just a hick I do listen to hip hop, r&b, alternative and some rock :)

I would prefer CMT if given a choice, but to be fair, CMT doesn't do videos much anymore either.

Or DirecTV could just launch new satellites for HD which is ongoing. Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2 are already up there and will deliver 500 HD locals (they have 40 or so running already). In 2007 DirecTV 10 and 11 go up and they are penciled in for 150 HD nationals and 1000 HD locals. DirecTV didn't have a bunch of capacity lying around on wing satellites and Echostar did. DirecTV's plans for deploying more HD aren't a secret, but they just can't do much until they have the satellites up there in 2007.

Let's travel to 2007 and see what a typical SatelliteGuys.us post looks like...

But how did they arrive at those 150 national HD channels and 1000 HD locals numbers? Are those calculated with channels being 1920x1080 or 1280x1080? With 15-17 mbs or 9-11 mbs?

Have they publicly committed to high bitrate 1920x1080 across all of those channels? Part of them?

If they are committed to high quality then great. That would only be good news for Dish subscribers. I hope they are the highest possible quality, so we can keep the heat on Dish to compete.

This would appear to be the perfect time for E* to begin an advertising campaign that stresses the fact that consumers have paid thousands for their HD displays and that they will be providing full resolution HD while the other satellite service will be providing its customers with HD Lite.

And you think E* is just gonna sit around and twiddle their thumbs? In 2007, I will receive my programming from whoever is giving me the best HD for the best price. I really dont care who it is.

Lets take a look at January 2006 shall we? D* launches mpeg4 HD lil. Still using crappy 1280i resolution. All other HD-lite channels are 1280i or 720p.

E* launches mpeg4 hd lil (format to be determined). 15 Voom channels in 1920i, and the rest of the HD Pak in non bitstarved HD.

THE only reason I would go with D* would be for NFLST. However, I like my hodge podge poor mans NFLST (i get pretty much every game in HD). Its more fun and its better quality to boot!:D

I'm all for Directv doing Full Rez HD also. I don't think there is anyone on the Dish forum that thinks otherwise. It would make for good competion and thats what we need. Lets face it Directv are the ones that started the whole HD lite hoopla, not Dish. Once Dish THOUGHT they could get away with it they did, but they found out that there customers will not stand for it. It would have been alot better for BOTH companies to do 1920x1080i from the start, so no one can say that people are hoping Directv keeps up the HD lite thing because thats totally untrue.

If you have equipment to measure the bitrate/resolution of the DirecTV Ka band channels we'd all like to know about. If you're just speculating make that clear.

That's what I would like to know since I haven't seen anyone post numbers on the new MPEG4 channels yet to say one way or another.

Its been known that Directv is using 1280x1080i on the KA 99 and 103 Sats.

Source please? Do you have a government filing, press release, or some guy taking a logic analyzer to the H20 to back that up? (Not to mention that Spaceway 2 [99 slot] hasn't even been turned over DirecTV from Boeing yet.)
