Dish messing with Voom, All are now HD-Lite 1280x1080i: Discuss this issue HERE!

Do you really think they will broadcast the HD pak channels at 1280x1080 but broadcast the HD locals at 1920x1280??? That wouldn't make much sense.

Except that the non LIL-HD channels are at MPEG2 on the KU satellites, which are VERY capacity contrained. They now have a bunch of new space on the KA slots and using MPEG4 so why do you think that they are doing 1280X1080???

Look at the Directv forum. There are numerous people that have stated that the HD locals look nothing like there locals OTA.

That's the problem with saying someone says something looks such and such. I have the Chicago MPEG4 locals and they look fine to me, comparing them to the OTA signals. . Don't give me a subjective analysis, give me raw numbers that say that the MPEG4 channels are 'HD-Lite'.

Let's try to make an analogy here so the logic error is clear.

Do you really think they will make rooms at the Wynn 1000 sq ft when at the Treasure Island they're only 600 sq ft? That wouldn't make much sense.

Just like the Wynn is a newer hotel with more space than the Tresure Island,
Spaceway 1 and 2 are new saellites that have more space to work with.

Just wanted to report that there have been zero changes to Voom, I was kinda hoping today would be the day :D, some uplink reports of Voom moving around(the 3 per transponder) this morning would be great ;)

Thanks for the update gary.

Ya know, I was looking at your page and I see that TNT-HD is still getting more kbps for audio then all the rest. I have never been able to find a definitive answer on this. Does anyone here know why yet?

I thought that they were all ready at three per transponer and we wanted two per transponder, is this not right?

That is very weird I agree, TNT is getting Dolby Digital in the bitrate it is on DVD, 448 Kbps

all other HD is getting Dolby Digital at the bitrate LD used, 384 Kbps

I don't have a clue as to why this is ??

I was meaning the moving of the Voom that ARE ALREADY 3 to a transponder, sorry sometimes I don't relay my thoughts very well ;)

That must be why TNT's sound is awesome!

The worst is ESPNHD. All I can ever get is 2-channel stereo. I end up switching to an alogue input rather than the 5.1 that is being received for this channel so I can at least get Dolby anaolgue.

BTW, I watched some of the Voom channels for a while last night (Monsters, Majestic) and I thought they had improved -- at least the sound was stable and the video was not breaking up. But by all reports, there have been no changes from 1280 x 1080i. Maybe the bitrate changed?

ESPN-HD doesn't do DD5.1. They're rumored to be making a change at some future date to DD5.1.

Yeah. They do something like SRS surround. Only a few receivers decode that.

You must have some magnificent hearing to hear the difference between 384kbps and 448kbps. I hear no difference in audio quality from tnt and tnt hd. Just get DD on the HD channel. Audio performance is more attibutable to the soundmix engineering then the bitrate alloted. I have many LD's that sound many times better than the DVD equivelent. I will say that more times then not, DTS sounds better than DD. Saving Private Ryan DTS audio is a big difference from the DD5.1 track.

As for PQ, I too thought things looks a little better last night on Monsters and Equator, but not back up to par with what I am used to seeing. (but then again, I sat in front of a 10 year old 20 inch all day monitoring processes at work). But at least the sound was consistent and no breakups like you mentioned.

I too prefer DTS audio over DD. I wonder why its not offered on some of the HD channels. It would be nice if they did. Kind of like how certain channels chose
720p instead of 1080i. They should have been able to chose DTS over DD if they wanted. Do you all ever think that in the future that they will ever go to 6.1 and eventually 7.1. I know that I've never seen 7.1 offered anywhere but I have seen 6.1 on a few DVD's like Gladiator.

heh, Circle Surround. Sounds like a reverb nightmare. :)

Don't everyone forget SDDS from Sony, they have to have their own too.

I for one think we owe Gary and big thanks for confirming with his equipment what we thought our eyes were telling us. Without his and others technical savy, I would have thought I was going blind or crazy or needing a new bulb. Again thanks Gary. You did a terrific service and I hope the results show it.
