Dish Hopper Pricing Rumors Thread

If you only have one TV then normally a customer would not need 3 tuners. If the customer really feels they need 3 tuners then I suppose they should be willing to pay a little more for it regardless if you are only using it for one TV.

I have to disagree with that...I have only one TV and there are a few times per week where 2 tuners are not enough. Some nights, such as when there is a UCONN basketball game on, even three tuners is not enough! However, if I was able to record all of the prime time shows on one tuner (Hopper) then 3 tuners would be enough.

As far as paying more for it...I have had a 622, a 722, and now a 722k. All of them were upgrades over the previous model, however I did not have to pay more per month for the newer receivers. With only one TV, I can't see how Dish can justify a whole house DVR fee.

I don't have a problem with them charging a whole house DVR fee. I feel they justify it by saying it has one more tuner than their dual tuners and also IS a whole home DVR. If you chooses not to use it for multiple TVs then that's your deal. The main objective of this receiver is for use with multiple HDTVs. I don't see why they need to justify it at all.

One note to add. You were not upgrading to anything that was drastically different. All of those receivers you listed are in the same family, very similar. Of course there shouldn't be a fee change with those. We are dealing with an entirely different family of receiver here and it requires a higher fee.

I guess the problem that I have with the fee is that it is supposedly a whole house DVR fee, however it looks like that fee will be charged for all Hopper installations. In that case it is NOT a whole house DVR fee, it is an extra fee that always goes with that receiver (like the 922). It does not make sense to charge someone a whole house DVR fee if they only have one TV.

Before I had my 622, I also had a 508 receiver. That was in a different family and had less features than the 622/722/722k and yet it did not cost me more per month to upgrade.

The problem is not $4 extra. My reply was to the one....where the poster told that 1st Joey can be $7 also....resulting in $11 increase in the bill for feeding 2 tvs vs say 722k
But the very first post in the thread says the first Joey isn't $7. So this is not an issue.

When you went from the 508 to the 622 I'll bet you had to pay a $5/mo fee for side two of that receiver. For years there was a $5 for it and then they allowed customers to avoid it by connecting to a phoneline.

Look, I can see a problem with the charge if Dish was forcing everyone to get this receiver but they're not. Why would it be the same cost if it is a better receiver with more abilities? Besides any of that arguing I try to think how Dish would manage those fees for customers. Would they note that an account does not have any Joeys so it only gets charged $6 and when they see a Joey on the account then it gets a $10 fee? I suppose it sounds simple enough but if I were Dish I wouldn't want to have to make those changes. If the customers doesn't want to pay the extra fee then stick with what you have.

Until recently, model 501 and 508 pvr's were exempt from the $6.00 mo dvr fee and were treated the same as a solo, non DVR. Even though they now carry a DVR fee, customers are currently receiving $6.00 mo. credits to offset it. I would think you saw at least the DVR $6.00 mo fee increase when you upgraded to a 622.

So that would have made it $11/mo. more by going to the new receiver. I'm thinking this just justifies Dish's reasoning even more.

That is not an official announcement. Its is an opinion of the OP based on the DHA agreement. The agreement does not say the first Joey is free anywhere in the text.

The residential customer agreement(RCA) that is referenced by the DHA agreement would seem to contradict the OP's opinion stating there is a flat $7 fee per Hopper and per Joey. The RCA is very clear the other (non-hopper/joey) receiver fees are "per additional" receiver. The Hopper and Joey lines make no mention of the fee only being for "additional" receivers. In theory not even the first receiver in a hopper system would be free. I personally don't think that will be the case, but the documents support such a fee structure.

Bottom line we don't know what the fees for first Hopper and Joey will be. At this point it is all conjecture.

Yes, it does:

Additional Receiver Fee
Each Solo receiver
$7.00/mo.
Each Hopper 2000 and Joey 1.0
$7.00/mo.

Now, the question at hand is the wording above this table doesn't specify whether a h/j pair is considered the "first" receiver, or just the hopper. That is why there is still a question on the first joey being free or not. A single hopper is definitely free.

That is from the DHA agreement not the RCA. The DHA is silent on the the first receiver cost. The RCA is included in the DHA agreement and implies $7 for any hopper including the first.

Again, I don't think that will really be the case. Just driving home the point this whole thread is conjecture, or at best an educated guess.

Just wait until Feb. 16th. All of these questions should be answered then. After that we will have a whole new set of questions.;)
