Who cares if it has a built in tuner? That doesn't change that fact that it's a piece of hardware that they have to pay to produce and distribute.
Doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of possitive coming from you lately concerning Dish Claude!?!?
That is actually a very important thing for many. The unit will not be able to be used without a secondary unit and for probably the same monthly fee.
If the issue is the cost of producing equipment, then why create a whole new product that does not include a tuner instead of just updating the software to allow existing hardware to do the same thing, like DirecTV did (One can simply use their own already set up home network or just get a minor hardware addition)?

AT&T charges a fee for each additional secondary unit for their U-Verse service. This is the same deal.
For someone that would get two hoppers and one joey, I think the price would actually be cheaper and another two tuners with all HD outputs is a plus. 625+722 = $23 vs. Two Hops and a Joey for $17. Even if Dish charges $7 for the first Joey on the first Hop that's $1 more at $24 with six tuners and primetime anytime along with three HD tv outputs vs. the two that I had before.
What is a "box return fee". Since when do they charge to return a receiver?

either you use their (dish) return label or ship it on your own dime
If your primary hopper receiver includes a joey whether you want one or not, this could be used for triple PIP, or PIP-ception, if you will. Engage PIP on one input to your tv, then on the hopper, then plug the joey into another input on the same tv, giving you a third PIP window on one screen. Sweet.
if you cancel Dish completely and send them the equipment back on your dime then yes there is no fee
FYI .. D* has been doing the same thing for at least a year. I've had several D* customers call and complain about it.
Claude wants to sell lots of Dish systems. Getting the price down will let him sell more and make more $$. If he could offer joeys at like $100 monthly fee free he could make money by selling them. If Dish just ships them out for free and a $7/month lease fee how is he going to make money selling them? It puts the dealers at a disadvantage.
Plus, he's big on D* these days anyway. It's easy to be down on Dish when you're making your money from D*.
