2013 MLB Postseason

Woke up and found out they lost. They actually deserved to lose after blowing all of those opportunities.

But I got the best nights sleep in a long time. I slept in until about 6:45. I feels like I slept half the day away. Now I am off to do some hardcore downhill mountain biking. Should be back before today's game.

I never understood it when a fan says his team deserved to lose. Sure the Dodgers had like 7 or 8 really good scoring opportunities last night. But did anyone do anything unsportsmanlike or non-team to render such a judgmental statement? You play hard and the games plays itself out. T-E-A-M win or lose.

Well that will keep the Tiger fans happy. They get the prime time slot tonight. I fear today's NL game will be sloppy after last night.

Its about time !

At least in this round, now that teams have been paired down, both series have 1 early game (4pm) to deal with and the rest are AFTER WORK ...

Thats the annoying thing, not being able to watch it, let along have a chance to go to the game when they are day time games.

Then again, ya really can't go to the 8 pm games either, seem to end about 11:30, by the time you get out of there and drive home it's 1:30am ... 5:30 am comes real early for work the next day.

I'm getting tired of all these posts bitching about the late start times. It is what it is and all the complaining here is not going to change it. Stay up late and watch the games, or go to bed.

I'll be a little tired for a few days, but hopefully it will be a happy tired...

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH.

This year wasn't quite as bad, games in Oakland started at 9:30 est, not as bad as the Hockey playoffs that would start at 10-13:30.

FWIW, if you read my post again, you'll see that I was commenting about them being at a reasonable time NOW !

Last night illustrated probably the biggest part of HFA: the home team gets last at-bats. Huge advantage in extra innings!!!
Too bad reality, history, and stats do not support that.

This is what is known as observational bias. When I taught stats we spent the most time discussing observational bias because it is so prevalent in society. From false conclusions that sugar makes kids hyper, to earth quake weather, to believing that an outcome is directly related to what you believe because that outcome happened to come true.

Since historically the home team wins about 50% of extra innings games, it would also be incorrect for me to say that HFA assisted the road team if when they happen to win an extra inning game on the road.

If you want to be technical, the Dodgers should have won the game in extra innings on Young's sac fly. Molina did not actually tag Ellis out. If that held up, then the Dodgers would have won in extra innings.

Simple. When you don't take advantage you do not deserve the reward.

Once again, I'm referring to going into the game, not the actual results. Please try to keep up.

It's not my fault if teams can't capitalize.

Perhaps you missed what I added to my post so let me post it again:

By saying, "Once again, I'm referring to going into the game, not the actual results. Please try to keep up," you are perfectly illustrating observational bias. It doesn't matter what you believe, it doesn't matter about going into a game. The conclusion you made was simply based on the outcome which conforms to your biased perception (the term bias is not a negative term, it is simply descriptive.) Correlation is not causation. The home team getting the last AB does not help them win a game. There is no statistical advantage.

This is exactly why I did spend most of the time discussion observational bias and also use examples throughout the entire course. No matter what is shown, no matter what evidence is presented, people will continue to make conclusions based on their own biases and perception. By hitting this issue hard over and over I was at least able to get many to question their own perceptions.

Did some intense mountain biking this morning. Now I'm getting sloshed at a bar watching the Dodger game

This place is packed with Dodgers fans. Usually all of the TVs are showing college football on Saturdays. Now only 1 TV has football and all of the other 50+ TVs have the Dodgers.

A group of guys have Dodgers shirts with a map of CA showing LA and Anaheim with the caption, "There's only ONE LA".

No Hanley and no Ethier. Their lineup just got drastically weaker. It will be difficult for them to win without them. They need this game. Lose, and they're done.

Crawford
M Ellis
Gonzalez
Puig
Uribe
Schumaker
AJ Ellis
Punto
Kershaw

This is a very week hitting lineup. It also forces people to hit out of position.

For someone who harps constantly on actual results, there's a lot of IFS there.... :o

Awesome pitching by Kershaw to prevent a leadoff triple from scoring.

A wasted opportunity by the Cards. Maybe today the results will be reversed?

This is funny positive spin to the injury bug.

[tweet]389127279361523712[/tweet]

Remember, the 88 world championship team featured the weakest hitting lineup ever in the WS due to injuries.

No Kirk Gibson, no Mike Scioscia, no Franklin Stubbs, no Fernando Valenzuela, no Mike Marshall, no John Shelby, no John Tutor.

By game 5 the guy with the most HRs in the starting lineup was their leadoff hitter, Steve Sax. He had only 5 HRs that year.

Imagine losing your 3 (MVP for that year), 4, 5, 6, and 7 hitters as well as 2 starters and still win the WS. That was some sort of magic.

One thing is certain. This ump has a wider strike zone than last nights ump.

He is tighter up and down though.
