Gotta love creative accounting! The Steelers were approx. $11 million over the salary cap yesterday. This morning, Adam Schefter reports Lamar Woodley signs a $61 million dollar contract and his cap number DROPS with the new contract.

What I've heard some teams are doing to avoid being over the cap is this....

Let's say the team is $10 million over the cap and wants to sign a player that will cost them an additional $10 million a year for 5 years. They're cutting that player a check for $20 million (to get below the cap) and pro-rating the rest of his contract over the life of the contract. Evidently, there's still a loophole.

NFL News:

-Trouble in paradise already. 49ers sent out a mass email yesterday afternoon to teams around the league to try and trade safety Taylor Mays.

-Former Bills S Donte Whitner agrees to a 3-year, $11.75 million deal with $4 million gtd with the 49ERS.

-There's $1.5 billion sitting in the NFL checking account, now ready to be sent to clubs for the new CBA - that's $45 million per club.

-WR Braylon Edwards and the San Francisco 49ers reached agreement on a 1-year, $3.5 million deal.

-Former Chargers WR Legedu Naanee and the Carolina Panthers reached agreement on a 1-year deal.

-Malcolm Floyd is now the biggest name WR left without a contract. Hello Cleveland?! We could use Malcolm!

-The Raiders, despite being $15.25 million over the cap, just committed $16 mil in 2011 to Michael Huff. Things that make you go hmmmmm....

-And now all the 1st round picks are signed: The last remaining "holdout", Giants first-round pick Prince Amukamara agreed to terms.

-One of the best parts of new CBA: all first-round picks signed by Aug. 4. No reason for first-round picks to hold out very long anymore. When was the last time all the picks were signed this early?!

Well that stinks. I know this doesn't fit into the Cleveland mantra, but the Jets are REALLY going to miss Braylon Edwards this year. He made some great catches last year and was very reliable.

Bummer.

Glad he worked out for you. He was a loudmouth, sensitive player who was far from reliable when he was in Cleveland. His nickname was stonehands for a reason.

Well he's obviously a diva to some extent and, evidenced by recent allegations, still has some growing up to do. I blame the University. ;)

But during his tenure here on the field, stonehands he was not.

Good for him in NY. But judging by his limited interest and measly 1 year deal in free agency, the rest of the league must've not been completely sold on him either.

I think that is less about his hands or his ability, and more about his penchant for being stupid.

For anyone with access to a TV, just a head's up: The Jets 10 am walk-thru and 2 pm practice will be broadcast live on NFL Network.

Braylon Edwards involved in Bar Fight!!

You are probably right...

Looks like Braylon was involved in another implication. This can't be good for someone who's already on probation.....

According to both sources, he mistook a bus boy only identified as "Dave" for a bouncer and charged into the kitchen after him. Edwards reportedly tackled Dave (described as a big guy who looks like a linebacker) and the two exchanged blows before they were separated. That's when members of Edwards' group stabbed two people, which resulted in their arrest later in the evening.

More on Braylon. Apparently, the idiot sent out a Tweet around the same time of the bar fight, then the next day blames it on his phone getting lost...

Edwards reportedly posted the following on Twitter at about the same time: “Damn. Get ya knuckles ready” and “Don’t fight if. You don’t know how.”

Curiously, Edwards recently posted the following message: “Yo…Lost my phone last night someone sent tweets. Deleted them and changed my password. Sorry for the mishap hopefully never happens again!” (We’d like to think that, if someone found Edwards’ phone and realized they had access to his Twitter page, they would have been a lot more creative than “Damn. Get ya knuckles ready” and “Don’t fight if. You don’t know how.”)

-Jerricho Crotch released from the Jets. The recieving corp of the NY Jets has suddenly been depleted. This can't be good for still learning Mark Sanchez....

The New York Jets' release of veteran wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery took a unexpected turn late Thursday night. According to head coach Rex Ryan, the decision was made by Cotchery himself, who had grown disenchanted with the franchise.

Not really a loophole if the players are getting paid, contracts have always been like this.

You have your annual salary, and then you have your prorated bonus. He has a 6 year deal, so his $22.5m bonus is spread over 6 years... that's $3.75m per year. Schefter says his cap number this year is only $6.5m down from his $10m+ franchise tag number so that means his salary this year is probably $2.75m. This just means that subsequent years will put more and more pressure on the cap as the back loaded contract progresses (which many players have and is routinely why players are cut).

Pretty sure massive workout bonuses and other things can make it so the bonuses apply to the cap at different times too.

So if it's a simple contract (which they rarely are) and contract is worth $42m outside of the bonus, his base salary could be something like $2.75m, $4m, $4m, $6m $10m, $15.25m. These numbers + $3.75m (the prorated over 6 years signing bonus) would be his cap number each year. Typically you don't see them run their entire course. With the salary cap based on revenue and some projections having that revenue double in the next 10 years, these numbers might actually be reasonable salaries by then and inflate as a rate slower than the cap will.

I have no idea if the above paragraph is how his contract breaks down, it could be a TON more complex, but it's certainly not a loophole, just salary cap math.

Jerricho Cotchery Released By New York Jets - SBNation.com

LOL Jerrico Cotchery in a nice receiver and all, but calling his departure a 'sudden depletion' is a stretch to say the least. The Jers are looking at Derrick Mason to replace him, which could be why Cotchery was released. That could be an upgrade, not a depletion.

Personally, these guys who are voicing concerns about HGH... I'd be all for testing them first. The testing can only be started when the union and NFL are satisfied with a provider, method for testing, and reliability of the test. To voice your displeasure now raises eyebrows IMO. Just shut up and make sure your union does their due diligence on your behalf.

Lost Crotch and Braylon. Looking to resign a soon to be 38 year old receiver? Yeah, I'd call that "depletion".
