Video Game Deals

Though I don't really play sport games (except Madden), it'll be nice to have a soccer game in my download list during World Cup season, as I nearly bought one during the last World Cup, getting caught up in all the excitement. However, playing a demo of a soccer game at the time showed me I have no business playing a soccer video game. lol

New Weekly Humble Bundle. Seems to be a collection of 8/16-bit style indie titles. The list is actually quite impressive, but there's a good chance you may already own a number of these games. Still, you get a LOT for $6 here.

I already had most of the games in the $6 range but several of the games in the $1 range and Teslagrad looked cool to me so I spent $10. I encourage people to check out the free game code thread because I am about to post a few of the games from this bundle there.

Gamefly is doing a 2K PC bundle weekend. None of these are outstanding deals but they aren't terrible either. The highlights are probably the Bioshock Collection and the Borderlands Collection. The Bioshock collection comes with Bioshock 1, Bioshock 2, Bioshock Infinite, and Infinite's season pass for $35.99. The Borderlands collection comes with Borderlands 1 GOTY edition and Borderlands 2 GOTY edition for $26.99.

I have seen great deals on all of these games individually several times so these collections only make sense if you haven't played anything in the franchise. Chances are, if you wanted any of these games on PC you already have them though.

$3 Gamestop Coupon

Get a $3 coupon toward used games or accessories at Gamestop. It said 24 hours to receive the coupon, got it within a few minutes. Load up bloodrealm:war gods on your droid or apple thing, press the red K box to sign up, then it will show you something to click to redeem the $3 and you'll get the gamestop coupon in email. Did this today, says expires 5/11/2014 so only a couple weeks to use it on something.

The game itself isn't anything I care for so will probably uninstall next time I grab the tablet.

PSN is having a Japanese game sale this week. I don't think I want anything here except for maybe the Metal Gear Solid HD collection for Vita but I doubt I'd ever actually play it. One of the biggest holes in my gaming background is that I've never played a Metal Gear game. From what I hear, the story in this series is so convuluted that I wouldn't understand anything without playing the older games. That helped make my decision to skip Metal Gear solid 4 and Ground Zeros/Phantom Pain a no brainer.

Coincidentally I fired up Metal Gear Rising on the PC for the first time last night. It's part of this sale but I just decided to launch it last night out of the blue. From what I've heard this one can be enjoyed even if you don't know any of the back story. It's just a 5 hour action game. The story is basically just a reason to slice people up with your sword. It definitely felt very Japanese so it's fitting for this sale. The character models, dialog, and action all fit into the Japanese theme. I'm enjoying the absurdity of it so far.

Also you wouldn't know much about what was going on because the HD collection stupidly omitted Metal Gear Solid (which really is the third game in the series) so you'd have a big gap between MGS: Peace Walker and MGS2. Technically if you wanted to play it in order, you'd have to do MGS3, PW, and then MGS2, but then you deal with weird gameplay changes, as opposed to just doing it based on release date. But without that first Metal Gear Solid, you'll be beyond clueless. I would say that it IS worth checking out the Metal Gear series. Yes the story is convoluted and somewhat hard to follow, but the series is still filled with some (if nothing else) interesting writing, memorable characters, fun plot twists, and the like. There's a reason why the series is so beloved, because it sure as hell isn't from goodwill stemming back from the original NES release. If you can ever find it really cheap, it would be worth your time and money to pick up the Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection. Honestly it's worth it at $50, but you don't seem like someone dying to jump into that world, especially with all the other high profile releases coming down the pike.

I've always been interested in the series but I missed the first couple because I was too young to appreciate it when it the first game came out. I have always been a completionist with some OCD tendencies when it comes to series, whether it's video games, books, TV, or movies. Even if a story is only slightly related like Dragon Age Inquisition to the older games I have a hard time playing them if I haven't played everything else in the series.

I had to play Borderlands before BL 2 came out, I have to play The Witcher 1 and 2 before I play The Witcher 3, I have to play Dragon Age 1 and 2 before I play Inquisition, and I could never jump into a TV series part way though. This can sometimes lead me to just skip games I'm pretty sure I would enjoy because the backlog is to crazy to go back and complete everything that came before. Metal Gear is one of those series that falls into that category. There are a lot of games I would need to play and some of them are pretty old at this point so I'm not sure how well they would even hold up. I'd like to play the new games but I know I never will unless I play the older ones first.

Edit: So even if I bought the HD collection I'd be missing the first game in the series. That's a no go. Too bad the Legacy Collection isn't available on PC. The price would be much lower by now if it was. Metal Gear Solid 4 being a PS3 exclusive probably has something to do with that. It's a little strange that Metal Gear Rising is available on PC at all. As far as I know it's the only Metal Gear game that is. If they were going to start including PC support it seems like Ground Zeros would have had it.

I think the main reason is because Rising was not made by Konami. It was made by Platinum Games. I don't think Konami has made any PC games themselves.
On the other hand, you can buy the original MGS cheap online and play it on the PS3, or you could even buy it from PSN and you can play it on your Vita. The game hasn't aged well graphically, but I played it again a few years ago in preparation for MGS4 and I had fun with it again. After that you can decide if you wish to continue playing the series. Obviously all this won't happen in time to take advantage of the current deal, but may be worth it.
