data rate matters just as much
I read through the whole thread, and the only one who came close to what I'm about to mention was nuts4scuba, above.
Ever notice the difference in quality between some channels in SD and others?
Ever see the bitching posted about locals sucking in SD?
They're all in 544x480, but some get a higher data (bit) rate.
I record a few (standard def) shows a week and have noticed the data rate varies from 1.9 megabits per second to 2.5 or more.
I've seen as high as three megabits, but since I don't keep logs, I can't swear where that was.
Generally, Discovery or Science channels (which I seem to record) will have 2.5mb rates.
They pop a lot better, too.
The point is, all this discussion of HD formats may be rendered moot by:
1). better or poorer format converters (as mentioned)
2). the chosen transmission data rate for a show/channel
