The Road to SuperBowl XLIV: The Official 2010 NFL Playoffs Thread

The sad thing for us Bolts fans is that Rivers and the Chargers have Manning's number (5-1 in the last 6 games as I remember), but F'd up the chance to get to that game. It wasn't the Jets that were overconfident, it was the Bolts.
don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have rivers on my team. he's a hell of a qb and one of the best in the NFL. its just peyton is on a whole other level. :)

Easy - he's Peyton Manning, and they're not....

Peyton had a really hard time in certain situations (big games) and against certain teams early in his career, but I'm to the point now that I don't doubt him anymore. He's entered the realm of Montana, Elway and Marino in at least one way: you always feel like if you give him the chance to beat you, he will.

Totally agree. I'm a big Phillip Rivers fan, I think he has a championship in his future...but at this point, he's no Peyton Manning. There is only one. ;)

After watching Manning play against the Jets the way he did, I ask this: how was he able to do what Carson Palmer and Philip Rivers couldn't?

Woah. Easy there Champ. In all fairness, even mentioning Palmer and Rivers in the same sentence as Peyton freaking Manning was your first mistake.

That's like comparing an Americanized Italian dish from the Olive Garden to a fine authentic meal in Tuscany, Sicily or Campania!!

...but don't order pizza in Italy. It's TOTALLY different!

What Sandra? I'm just breaking down some of the "simplest of elementary math"! ;) :D

I think we all can agree that Manning/Brady or Brady/Manning :D are the best QB's of this era (and amongst the best of all time). IMO, who you think is better is a matter of opinion.

That being said, lemme ask you a hypothetical question.........

We can also agree that LeBron and Kobe are the best basketball players of this era (who you think is better, is again a matter of opinion). which leads me to my hypothetical....................

IF LeBron has three championships to his name, and Kobe has one. AND LeBron has a significant advantage in the h2h matchups, AND everything else is relatively equal in their HOF careers............who do YOU say is the better player?

PLEASE be honest..... ;)

I understand the hypothetical and get your point Bill. It's a thrilling discussion. One that will be debated for an eternity, I'm sure.

I guess I was always in the camp that believes that the number of Championships don't necessarily define someone as the "greatest". There are simply too many variables. I like to look at the entire picture, including every statistical category.

If Championships defined the greatest of all time, then Terry Bradshaw would be crowned the greatest QB of the Super Bowl generation, which I am simply not willing to accept. :)

Another example is Dan Marino. He is STILL one of he greatest QBs of all time. With not ONE ring to show for it.

Not really, simple fact is coaches and quarterbacks get judged on wins and losses.

I don't have a problem with people saying Brady winning three SB's to Peyton's one doesn't necessarily make Brady the better QB.

Afterall, Trent Dilfer won more Super Bowls than Dan Marino. And who's the better QB there? puhleese!!!!

BUT (and this is a HUGE but) we're not talking about Trent Dilfer here, we're talking about Brady-Manning, and the postseason (14-4 and 9-8) and Super Bowl wins (combined with everything else BOTH have accomplished) cannot be overlooked.

I personally don't think there's a right answer in regards to who's better. It's all a matter of opinion.

Stay on topic......Stay on topic.....(They are coming in too fast) :D

But those records aren't games of Manning vs. Brady. If Manning could ever get past the Chargers in the playoffs, the numbers might be significantly different. The Colts only advance when they don't have to face San Diego.

:bow good point salsa
as hart mentioned, we judge qb's and coaches by wins/losses especially with championships, which is an error on our part. TEAMS win championships. not just one player. that's just like the saying "defense wins championships". i don't agree with that. you need to score some points on offense too to win the game. sooooo...... TEAMS win championships :D. most champions were pretty balanced on both sides of the ball;) another good example is Don Shula. if we're only going to look at wins/losses then shula must be the greatest coach that ever lived. he's only the winning-est coach in nfl history and the coach of the only team with an undefeated season.yet not everyone has him as the greatest coach in nfl history. so i guess it's a matter of opinion. he his however without a doubt one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game.

Two other things that can't be overlooked:

1. Who had the better team around them early in the decade?

2. Who's been better in nearly every way (including head to head and SB wins) in the last few years? If we were having this discussion 3 or 4 years ago (or maybe even during the Patriots almost 19-0 season), it would look a lot different, but I don't think anyone can argue that Peyton is on a completely different level right now, no matter who you compare him to.

If the Colts win the Super Bowl this year and their careers keep going the way they appear to be going at the moment (in opposite directions), there won't even be an argument to have in a couple more years.
