Stargate SG-1 Discussion

The SG1 dvd's (or rips) aren't that bad at all, I have a spare lamp so not worried about the hours... I started watching a SG1 themed SGA (Critical Mass) before I realized it would put me way late going to bed, it was a rip from BD and you could see and hear the difference between the HD cap from Sho & the BD...

Just watched Fail Safe. Kind of a cliche episode, but still good. But my wife is hanging out in the living room now, so i guess my Stargate marathon plans are not going to continue. LOL

I like Fail Safe a lot. O'neill has a ton of great, funny lines in it. Actually, all the main cast have great lines. From the "I have confidence" stuff to "Carter, I can see my house!" It's a fun ride. Sure, it's cliche'd pretty heavily, but like you said, still good. :)

What is impressive about seasons 2 - 5 is the constant follow-through on prior episodes and generally a huge build-up of the plot.

The one thing I am leery about from Fail Safe, and simply don't know the physics, is the idea that by going to hyper-space, you could go right through the planet.

That's part of what made it such a great series. The writers knew where they wanted to go with the show and built upon prior episodes to keep continuity going. Something that TNG did well, DS9 did quite well and B5 did well.

As for the physics of it. The idea of using the hyperdrive engines to put a sub-space bubble around the asteroid and then ride it through Earth via sub-space, it's a big stretch on theoretical physics, for sure, but it makes for good storytelling. ;)

Finished season 5 and just watched Redemption. You can tell they switched to Si Fi and they were trying to explain things to new viewers, there were several times when they would say stuff that they NEVER would do otherwise to provide facts. :) Still good, except, I got to say its unclear to me that you could really move an ACTIVE stargate.

I would guess the question would be how far are you moving the active gate? Within certain limits, and taking into account the coordinate system the gates use, I would imagine you could (within the stargate universe) move them quite aways, if you account for the "drift" factor in movement. They lined up a whole group of them in SGA to get from Atlantis to Earth. I bet that was some major reconfiguring. :)

Talking theory is fun, Satellitegal, especially within the "rules" a show sets for it's "universe". :)

As long as the Stargate stays on the planet they are good as far as coordinates are concerned.

You guys have got me watching again. I watched the first 10 episodes this past weekend.

Thats what gets me about some people running down shows or movies... ;) It's entertainment, don't question... :D

Well, I accept the science-fiction premise which is their foundation, but occasionally a solution will be offered that simply defies even the logic of their "fiction-science" :) Now, if the Asgard or Tollan or Nox came and saved the day, that would have been different. :D

But that said, I love every minute of this show. :)

I must say, the seasons 2-5 magic is just not there in season 6. Five episodes in, and just not feeling the love the same way. But still enjoying my second go-round of the full ten seasons... but kind of dreading the Ori Arc.....

Well since stargates work on ships in orbit (a ship in orbit is moving pretty fast), one assumes they can move quite a bit.

But one has to also remember the earth is turning fast, orbiting the sun fast and the sun is moving around the galaxy. There is quite a bit of motion going on while a stargate is operating. The only limit expressed in the show is that FTL and stargate operation seem mutually exclusive.

It just snapped, thats why Sho Beyond quit showing as it was S6 when Scifi took over was it not? I was hoping to see the rest in HD... some of the Ori arc would likely be new to me.

Season 6 was the beginning of sigh-figh, thus all the explanatory comments in the first few episodes.

I just have been "eh..." with this season so far. Oh, Jonas is fine, but stuff like Baal killing Jack over and over, not fun tv to watch.

It's still better than 90% of what's on sigh-figh now... Baal is a nasty guy...his torture of Jack is what sets up the terrific revenge piece in Continuum...
