Broncos owner Pat Bowlen on Tuesday relieved Mike Shanahan of his position as head coach and executive vice president of football operations. Said Bowlen in a statement: "After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos."

Personally I find this news stunning! I have Shanahan in the top 10 NFL coaches of all-time. He's a 2 time Super Bowl winner, a great offensive mind and game-time motivator.

Screw Cowher. I think Cleveland just found their #1 new head coaching candidate! Pay the man Jammies! :D

They sort of had to do it. The Broncos have been crap for the last few years and their collapse this year was unacceptable. Frankly losing to both Oakland and KC this year should have been a fireable offense. I don't know how much Shanahan has left to offer. Considering how well no name coaches did in Baltimore, Miami and Atlanta that may be the new trend.

WOW! We all thought Shanahan was anointed for life, and Bowlen would never do this. We (fans) were just hoping for him to be relieved as VP and to get yet another Defensive Coordinator. He's 24-24 with no playoffs over the past 3 years. Those 2 Super Bowls were 10 & 11 years ago, and just don't hold weight anymore. That plus only 3 playoffs since then, with 1 win...

WOW...
You'd think with all the years he put in that a below avg season would not get the guy fired ...

here comes cleveland? well like some of us said earlier he's well liked in denver but maybe it was time for a change. there ya go. more heads will roll before the week ends.

Careful what you wish for. Good coaches aren't easy to find in the NFL.

Gawd! I'm blushing at the opportunity at hiring Shanahan! Next to Jeff Fisher, Shanny would be my #1 coaching candidate among current NFL coaches!

PLEASE come to Cleveland!!!! I'd much rather have him than Cowher (although I'd rather have RAC than Cowher). I hope Lerner has already been on the phone :)

From what I heard from a person close to the Broncos....Shanahan had refused to fire the defensive coordinator after owner Bowlen asked him too. The Bronco defense really sucked this year and that's what cost him his job. I would love to see Parcells in Denver :D

this makes sense. he wouldn't be the 1st coach to be fired for the loyalty to his coaches. (the defensive coach did suck though)

Considering the way that Shanahan has gone through defensive coordinators in past years -- Greg Robinson, Ray Rhodes, Larry Coyer and Jim Bates -- that doesn't seem too credible. Why would he suddenly become so loyal to someone who was just as bad, or even worse, than the guys above?

what i'm hearing now is they wanted him to give up his gm role and stick to coaching. he said no way. see ya. maybe we'll have to wait till tomorrow for clearer details.
