Paramount +

I'm gonna need more than a Reddit post. Looking at TCL's website, but it is useless so far.
Well, I think comfortably_numb is probably right about what Smart HDR is. I had to read between the lines on AVSForum, but it definitely seems like it is interpolated HDR. HDR standards like HDR10 and DV will show up as such, while Smart HDR is a picture setting that makes SDR look more HDR-like. An example post where it is being discussed:

The TCL manual, such as it is, just says "Smart HDR- Powerful and vivid picture."

Once again-

The TCL QM8/QM851G QLED is the highest-end offering in TCL's 2024 North American QLED lineup and sits above the TCL QM7/QM751G QLED. It uses TCL's AIPQ Engine Gen3 processor and is advertised as being over twice as bright as its predecessor, with up to 5000 dimming zones depending on the size. The TV is loaded with features like Dolby Vision and HDR10+, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, 4k @ 144Hz, 1080p @ 240Hz, and VRR support.

That's nice, but that doesn't mean "smart HDR" is real HDR.

Never said it was, you apply that setting when viewing HDR, you cannot apply that setting when watching non HDR content, TV does not let me, I tried last night.

It is the same when viewing DV content, DV Bright/Dark/IQ, which I cannot select when watching non DV content.

Do not know why you are so obsessed with this, I have posted links and photos many times to prove my point.

My TV does HDR/DV, my Paramount app shows HDR, proven.

Wrong TV, that is last year’s model, I have the 2024.

And it was reported that some could select Smart HDR on the 2024 model, updates for the TV have allowed me to go into the menu and disable it for non HDR content, which it is on my TV.

It only lets me on HDR programing, including HDR 10+, the option is not even there for DV content.

My TV which uses Google.

I built a new stand ( out of 3 stands) last night, because I did not have enough room for all my components and I wanted something that was the width of the TV (98”) for proper center channel placement.

Roku will be hooked back up after my work out, I am typing all this while I am outside on my LifeCycle, incredibly hard to focus while pedaling.
I am interested in what the app on the Roku streaming device shows for Tracker. Both my Apple TV and LG P+ app only shows 4K with nothing showing HDR or DV. And when I watch it on either app the HDR flag does not show up. I can force HDR on the Apple TV by setting the video settings to 4K HDR and turning off "Match Dynamic Range" and "Frame Rate" which makes the Apple TV apply the HDR because it not in in the P+ stream.

Seal Team and NCIS:Sydney both show DV and I do get the HDR flag when watching those 2 shows on the Apple TV. The LG app shows both HDR10 and DV for those two shows and I also get the HDR flag when watching them on the LG app.

I'm not obsessed. I believe you claimed that your TV shows "Smart HDR" for content your P+ app says is HDR. Myself and others have been pointing out that you aren't getting true HDR on P+ shows like Matlock, even though the picture "looks better."

I have not watch the second episode yet, after I get everything hooked back up ( just finished the sound system last night before I crashed), I will start it on the Roku, then switch it to the TV’s app.

Starting to believe there are 30 different versions of the app, for all the different TV’s operating systems and then devices.

Again, on my TV, Smart HDR is disabled when there is no HDR (data), it only pops on when there is HDR data available, that option was selected when I had the TV calibrated,.

Yes, Paramount could be sending HDR data even if there is none available, but I have no way to prove that.

So you're saying you think that Smart HDR is actually "real" HDR because you have Smart HDR disabled in your TV?

Sorry, that makes zero sense to me.

Never posted that, just that it only comes on now when there is HDR data available, just like when the DV options are available.

The ISF tech enabled that for me, that option was in the advanced settings.

Again, obsessing, I have explained many times now.

Why does your TV not show HDR for the shows/movies, while mine does, as proven by my photos?

Because the APP ISN'T SENDING HDR DATA FOR THOSE SHOWS TO THE TV, just like it isn't sending it to your TV either. Your TV is saying "Smart HDR," which isn't HDR. Why is this so difficult to understand?

Agree. I don't see this kind of thing on other apps like D+, Hulu, Max, Peacock, etc....
I do not either, now some work differently, like I posted, the Movies Anywhere app on the TV, only HDR/DD+ is available, even if it says DV/Atmos, but on the Roku, works fine.

What is so difficult to understand , that picture setting is disabled for SDR content, it only comes on if HDR data is available, I cannot select it, whited out on my TV, the ISF tech recommended me doing so, which I agreed with and he did so.

I never posted that Smart HDR is HDR, only that it came on when HDR data was available, does not mean the picture was in HDR, could be incorrect data, but it certainly looked it.

Same thing happens when DV data is available, DV Bright/Dark/IQ is there, along with Vivid (Torch Mode…yech).

You already posted that nothing shows as HDR for you, my photos proved that is different for me, you have a different version of the app.

No HDR flag on the TV.

If it says HDR or HDR10 and or DV in the show info it is sending real HDR data. For example Seal Team and NCIS:Sydney both show DV on both the LG app and the Apple TV app and I get the HDR flag on both.

I am not sure what Smart HDR is on his Roku TV but since the show info shows HDR on the 4K shows on his TV I have to believe he is getting real HDR.

Just tried with my latesst gen Roku 4k and latest gen AppleTv 4k. Neither show HDR/DV for Tracker on my 2023 Sony and it doesn't trigger the HDR mode. I have 3 new 2024 TCL QLED's that I bought this summer, but since it lets you set them up as dumb tv's on initial setup, I didn't enable any of the GoogleTV features, so can't check them without going through the google setup.

Not a Roku TV, a TCL QM85 that uses Google TV.

As I explained to him multiple times, Smart HDR is just a picture setting, that is set ( now, thanks to the ISF tech) to only comes on when HDR data is available, just like when there is DV data and DV Dark ( preferred) is then available.

I am willing to concede it could be incorrect data, but I have no control over that.
