NHL 2011-12 Season

why are you using james harrison as an example in a thread about the NHL??? if you wanted to use the NFL as an example you could've used any other player.

Because I've heard that said about James Harrison, and nobody else. I'm sorry, when you are guilty that often, like it or not you become the poster boy.

Since we're in the NHL thread, Sean Avery (one of my favorite Rangers) is the NHL poster boy for saying stupid things. He's not the only one who has said stupid things, but like it or not, he's the poster boy, because he's said some of the stupidest...and I don't defend him on that, just because he's one of 'mine'.

Back to helmets, Jimbo brought up that exact point about the NHL, which a lot of people agree with...taking off helmets will reduce some of the stickwork. But I'm not convinced it will reduce concussions from hits.

right......... because you would have no other reason to bring up Harrison in a NHL thread, and mention that just because he's one of 'yours' you wouldn't defend him. and it must also be a coincidence that you're directing your comments at a steeler fan who has openly defended harrison in the past but has decided to as you say, 'move on' and has dropped the subject.

i suggest YOU get back to talking about the NHL in this thread sandra. thank you

back to the NHL...sadly the Houston Wild...err Minnesota Wild are no longer in 1st in the west.
The reason I say Houston Wild is so far the Wild have had to bring up guys from Houston 14 times because of injuries

Big game tonight against the Vancouver Twins.

Sandra

yep the 3 games in 4 days Western Canada trip
Vancouver tonight
Calgary tomorrow
Edmonton Thursday

it will be sooooo nice next year to only have that once instead of 4 times

Iceberg, just curious...you follow both sports.

What are your thoughts on concussions in the NHL? What do you think about players playing without helmets? Would that reduce concussions?

I think it would reduce stickwork...which is bad, of course, but different from concussions. Most NHL concussions are caused by elbows and hits, and the occasional puck...but rarely sticks.

People say that in the NFL perhaps a David Harris would not lead with his helmet if he had a much smaller helmet...so smaller helmets would reduce concussions.

Thoughts?

Houston is Minnesota's farm club ?
WOW, thats a LONG trip to see action ... for possibly a game or two.

no way the NHL goes back to no helmets. Too many players wear the full face shield helmets...or as Don Cherry says "only European players and French guys" wear those ;)
The NHLPA would be all up in arms about that.

so what are they suppose to do? Not hit anyone? They already took out one part of hockey (at least from my standpoint) and thats good fighting. Yeah there is a little bit of fighting but not like it use to be. Watched the Alaska Aces last night (ECHL team) and the opposition scored on a pp and ended up starting a fight (not the brightest move Aces as you're down a man) but it was a brawl with all 9 guys getting into it.

I realize there are some more concussions this year but how many concussions went unnoticed previously? Maybe the NHL is taking a safety first approach. And whats next. Ya cant check? Sorry but I dont want the NHL to turn into women's hockey

Personally I think with the speed of the game picking up so much since the lockout, checking is as fierce as it's ever been. While there were lots of fights in the old days, I don't think there were as many collisions as we are seeing now. Players are bigger and faster, they're relieved of the center red line, the size of the rink has not changed, and they are running into each other...hard...more than they ever have.

I know the Broad Street Bullies would start bench clearing brawls that would last for a half hour at a time...bleh, if you want to see fighting for fighting's sake, watch boxing. A fight that breaks out because your goalie was run into is one thing (although not with Milan Lucic!). Endless fighting would be boring.

Keep the speed in the game, and keep Don Cherry's opinions out of the game, as far as I'm concerned. The man is a dope and just talks so people in Canada will say 'did you hear what Don Cherry said' Saturday night? Or did you see what he wore?

I used to watch Coach's Corner reilgiously...but it's the same silly mantra over and over again.

Simple solution, don't watch Cherry if you don't like him.
I haven't seen him in ages, but I have cut my Hockey viewing WAY back in the last 5 years.
Ever since The Captain retired, just haven't been into it as much as before.

I miss Mark Messier too, Jimbo!

I used to record the Hockey Night in Canada game if I wasn't watching it, just to watch Coach's Corner and Satellite Hot Stove. Not anymore. If I'm watching the game and it happens to come on, I watch. If I miss it...oh well.

Sandra

But Cherry has a point.....no touch icing needs to be implemented. How many injuries happen because of 2 guys racing down the ice to prevent icing? Only to have one get slammed in the board an injured.

I don't disagree with that statement. It's not like Cherry is wrong 100% of the time...even a broken clock is right twice a day!!!

Sandra

A big part of the concussion issue in the NHL is that the players are bigger, faster and stronger. The game has changed in the past 20 years and with that comes new problems.

+1 on that. I also think any hit to the head needs to be penalized just like a high stick. Doesn't matter if it was intentional. I wouldn't miss fighting if it were eliminated but you would need the refs to enforce the rules better, no even up calls, no putting away the whistles at the end of a close game.
