NFL preseason 2010-2011 Official discussion thread!

Suspicion usually means blood tests haven't come back and/or he hasn't been charged.

He was pulled over for changing lanes without signaling and then did poorly w/ the field sobriety tests, was arrested and held overnight.

Good thing nobody ran out in front of him like Stallworth's DUI (who passed his field sobriety tests, and only became a DUI when blood tests came back)

He was pulled over for WHAT ?

The cops would be tired at the end of the day if they pulled everyone over for not signaling here ...........

One on One with Mike Holmgren: Rebuilding the Browns

Holmgren is a rarity in the NFL: Ask a question and he'll answer. If he can't, he'll simply admit it. Monday, the new Browns president addressed many issues, among them his and the Browns' thinking about quarterbacks Jimmy Clausen (thumbs neither up nor down) and Sam Bradford (thumbs up) as the draft approaches.

This is one of the most candid interviews I've seen to date....

The Nationally Televised game schedule should be announced on Tuesday, if anyone cares.

This was supposed to happen yesterday (at least parts of it) and then it was pushed to today and now the whole thing is TBD.

Apparently it's believed to be over a SNAFU with the new NY stadium. The Jets and Giants were disagreeing over who should play the first game in the new stadium, and that it would be decided by a coin flip or something.

Well then the league did the coin flip, and the Giants won.

With neither the Giants or Jets present.

The Jets called shenanigans and as a compromise it's believed that they'll both have a home game opening weekend now.

Changing one game sends ripples through the rest of the schedule, so things have to be reworked.

Edit: Peter King says the schedule stuff has been pushed back at least a week.

NFL owners have enacted new OT rules for the playoffs 28-4 and will be in effect for the 2010 playoffs. In May they'll discuss doing it for the regular season too.

Overtime proposal passes | ProFootballTalk.com

DIssenters were Bills, Vikings, Ravens and Bengals

Can't win the game on an opening posession FG, but if you give up a safety on the opening possession, you lose.

From John Clayton :

Although the Oakland Raiders said JaMarcus Russell checked into their offseason program in better shape at 271 pounds, odds are still favoring Bruce Gradkowski as the Raiders' starting quarterback. Raiders coach Tom Cable is encouraged that Russell is in Oakland working with his teammates, but that's it. Others are saying Russell still is heavy and needs a lot of work just to be able to compete successfully for the starting job.

Cable said Russell's delivery doesn't need work and he has one of the best pure arms in the game. But Russell still stares at his receivers long enough for cornerbacks to react, and he's inconsistent with his accuracy. Raiders owner Al Davis wants Russell to be the starter, but unless Russell works harder, it will be hard for Davis to force the issue.

I would assume the game would also end if Team A wins the toss, throws an INT, and then Team B kicks a FG?

Either way, it's a great move by the NFL, IMO! :up

Ya know, some games could go on forever needing to score 7 points ......

IF both teams go down and kick FG's does the next FG win, seeing it would give them 6 points ?

Jimbo,

I think the rule is in place so both teams get the ball in OT, unless the first team scores a TD.

Another thing this rule change does is put in coaching stategy.

Think about this scenario: The Steelers are playing the Pats in the playoffs. The Steelers win the toss and are moving the ball down the field on the Pats defense. Now it is 4th and 1 from the Pats 10 yard line, do the Steelers........

A. kick the chip shot FG

OR

B. try to score the TD to end the game before Brady and company ever see the field

VERY intriguing indeed! :up

They will have to institute this or some version of it for regular season games too. Don't forget about those important late season games that are essentially playoff games anyway...

Yeah, but for those you have 15 other games that helped determine your fate. In the playoffs you just have the prior 60 minutes.

I agree though, any rules for the playoffs should apply to every game. There are just concerns about increased playing time resulting in more injuries.

Cable today also said the RB position is up for grabs, with Bush and McFadden competing for it. They don't want a committee, they want someone to take every snap at the position. I don't really see McFadden as that kind of back... I think they two can be pretty complimentary, and I see Bush as more of the every down type of back with McFadden as the change of pace guy.

Either way I think they're really going to miss Justin Fargas.

They will ABSOLUTELY miss Fargas! His work ethic was 2nd to none. HD might have brushed me off when I said he was work harder than anyone else on that team....but he will see it for himself.

Yeah, the new rules are basically null and void if no FG is kicked on the opening posession.

So you do NOT have to score 6 points to win ?
I was under the impression that you needed to score 6 points to win.
However, if my team goes down and kicks a FG and the D stops the other team on the next possession, the game is over ?

The 6 point thing was being discussed earlier.

The new rule says the team that gets the ball at the start of overtime can win on the opening possession only with a touchdown. If that team kicks a field goal, the other team gets a possession with a chance to either win with a touchdown or tie with a field goal. If the score is tied after that, it would be sudden death from that point on. If neither team scores on its first possession, the game would continue on a sudden-death basis.
