That's all cool stuff but,again what good is converting a first down on 3rd down if they don't score?I agree that it is a very key component to increasing a teams odds of scoring but,it doesn't always = points on the board.So to me the most important statistic is points scored.
Time of Possession, or keeping the ball away from the other team's offense...
I agree that points scored (and points against) is what ultimitely decides wins and losses, but what I'm saying is when you get those first downs is gonna go a long way in deciding a game. The Patriots are the perfect example. They looked like world beaters when they became the first team in NFL history to have three straight 30+ first down games, but then (like they so often have over the last 4 years) couldn't buy a first down(s) to close out the game in Seattle.
