NFL 2009-10 Season

I get that Burris broke the law. My problem is that you know that rapists, child molesters, drug dealers, mob goons, etc can all avoid serious jail time in a state like NY, but Burris is the guy who has to do hard time. When NY state locks up all the dangerous criminals, makes it safe to walk through the Bronx at night, and wipes out the mafia, then they can throw the book at Burris. Otherwise don't patronize me with this tough on crime act because that's all it is, an act!

I believe that they are being a little excessive with him. Trying to make an example out of him, but that won't work. Criminals aren't deterred by this kind of thing.

The guy broke the law, im not sure why you guys have a problem with it. Unlike congress, 1 judge hearing a case doesn't mean everyone else is getting off free.

He'll be lucky if he doesn't get a couple of years.

I have no issues with the fact that he broke the law. I get that...really I do. I just wonder if anyone from the Bronx, Queens or any other burrough would confirm that a NY DA is chasing down muggers and hoodlums with the same zest as they are going after Burress...?

If they were caught, they would be punished to the full extent of the law, the same as Burress. The difference here is that NYPD didn't "chase down" Burress like you suggest. He shot himself in the leg. He decided to break the law and carry a gun into public. In no way is this anybody's fault except for HIS! Plex brought this upon himself.

Excessive?? He unlawfully discharged a weapon in a public place and fled the scene. Why shouldn't he receive the proper punishment if found guilty??

We're just too used to celebrities getting away with things that when one does face the same punishment that you or I would get unfortunately it seems strange....

Punished to the full extent of the law? That's laughable. People get away with murder every day in NY. Burris is being made an example of because it's easy. The assailant and the victim are one in the same! A prosecutor who flunked the bar exam 6 times could win this case. How about breaking up a cocaine trafficking ring instead? No that would hard. Drug dealers don't usually turn themselves in to the police and their victims don't often live to tell the story.

You mean "limped the scene".:D

He discharged the weapon into himself. Is that not punishment? This is like locking up a guy who tries to commit suicide and fails for attempted murder. :haha

Yes clearly because of all of this he should get off easy, rather than call a guy and trade Burress for a cocaine dealer

Or, how about just enforcing the law. That's what they're doing. Doing that doesn't mean someone else gets off. What's hard to understand there? Gun laws are very tough in NY, he was an idiot, not the DA. If all you have is straw man arguments to back yourself up, im not sure why you bother arguing. How are you going to convince anyone with 'killers and coke dealers get off every day but this guy is going to jail' ?

Discharging the weapon is just tacking on more counts to charge him with, just possessing it is enough (which is why Pierce was reportedly being considered for a felony charge himself).

Prosecutors make subjective decisions all the time about who to enforce the law on. Guys with criminal records a mile long are set free or given light sentences all the time for various reasons. It's not black and white. Yes Burris was an idiot. Yes he should be found guilty. I just don't think he should go to jail. New York is crawling with dangerous criminals that avoid jail time for far more serious offenses. When you lock them all up then you can to to Plaxico as you please. Until then use some common sense and go after the real thugs out there not some moron football player who shot himself.
