NFL 2009-10 Season

Either way, Andrew Walter was signed, and to make room on the roster, they cut his competition, QB Matt Gutierrez. I've never heard of him, but before Cassel stepped in for Tom Brady, he was believed/expected to pass Cassel on the depth chart during the season.

As PFT says... "Now Cassel is the $63mil man, and Gutierrez is looking for work."

Also, Panthers lost starting DT Maake Kemoeatu for the season to an ACL tear.

This is so true.

Last preseason I was MUCH higher on Gutierrez than I was Cassel.

But Cassel really proved himself during the regular season.

Antonio Pierce won't see charges for his part in the Plaxico stuff (should have, but good testimonials got the grand jury to ignore his potential charges... we'll see if Goodell is as forgiving)

Plaxico will, barring an 'OJ miracle' as PFT put it, be going to jail.

I find it interesting that with ALL the crime in New York City, all the corruption in politics IN NYC...they, as in the DA, go so hard after Burress. I mean he didn't even point the gun at anyone and SHOT HIMSELF....and they are going after him as if he held up a gas station, shot and killed the attendant and blamed it on his baby's momma.....

...IF they would after REAL criminals as hard as they have gone after Burress, NYC would be considered one of the safest cities in the US.

The Law's the Law.

NY has tough gun laws, lead by Mayor Bloomberg. Consealed weapons are banned in NYC. Especially ones that aren't even registered in the state.

It doesn't matter what the outcome was, the law is cleary stated and it should've been up to the Burress to check the law before heading to the club with a loaded Glock in his drawers.

Then make sure that same ZEAL used to chase a stupid mistake made by ONE person TO HIMSELF is used to chase OTHER LEGIT criminals.

Unfortunately that gas station robber probably doesn't have the name recognition that Burress has. To make an example of someone to the public and hopefully deter these kinds of things from happening again it definitely helps that the defendant be a notable person....

I actually don't think this is a case of "making an example" out of Burress. Bloomberg has been historically tough on Gun Crimes. The fact that he's NOT letting up on Burress speaks volumes on his stance. I was listening to Mad Dog on Sirius yesterday and they were saying that ANYONE caught with a concealled gun in NYC automatically gets 3.5 years in the pen.

One one hand you have athletes commit crimes and get off scott free. (Wern't you the one calamoring about Stallworth)? On another hand you have an athlete that doesn't get prefforential treatment through the courts.

No one will ever be happy.

On one hand, he KILLED a person because he was impaired...on the other hand, he didn't even take the gun out to point it at ANYONE because he shot himself.

...apples and oranges here...

I wanted Stallworth to get MORE than he got. Look at it this way, your celebrity can help you and hurt you. IF this situation happens to someone else, it's probably a misdemeanor gun posession and it's over with. BUT because he is Plaxico Burress and HAS had some history of problems in the past....he more than likely will do jail time for hurting NO ONE but himself....

....and Stallworth is done with his jail time.

By example, I meant that because of Burress' notoriety the NYC DA's office has been given the opportunity to publicize the fact that they are tough on gun crimes. The media doesn't report on the everyday street banger....

Yeah, holding him to the letter of the law is important to show that they're not giving him prefferential treatment.

Also on the DA's website it is stated that the bullet narrowly missed a security guard.

Via the grand jury, they're able to show how tough the law is (vs Burress) and yet restraint (vs Pierce) because Pierce should have faced possession charges himself for taking the weapon home that night.

I'm with you salsa. Normally I'm all about being tough on crime, but this wasn't a crime so much as it was an act of stupidity. He shot HIMSELF!!!!! He admits it. The state doesn't even have to prove their case and they want to send him away for several years. If ever there were a case that called for leniancy this would be it. Get a guilty plea, give him probation and hit him with a fine, end of story. Instead they're gonna make him do do time for this. As if there's not enough real crime in NYC. I guess they'll just have to release the Son of Sam to make for for Burris in jail.

But when is it ok to make acceptions?

Like I said originally, the law cleary states that concealed guns are NOT allowed in NY. At all! The fact that he shot himself is besides the point. He broke the law when he stepped out in public carrying his Glock. Gun laws are different in NY, North Carolina and Florida.

He must have the sh***iest lawer in the world. ANY OTHER lawyer would have pleaded this down to a misdemeanor gun possession as long as he had not major priors or a long history of some kind.

Personally, I think this is a witch hunt....way too many scumbags running the streets of NYC to be making such a major issue about this.

Not really, it did happen.

You wouldn't think it was hypothetical if you were the security guard.

It's hypothetical in the way it is being presented. To me they are basically saying, "this crime is so bad, see...it COULD HAVE hit a security guard"....

...I am sure the security guard does not think it's hypothetical, but in this world of "gimme my 15 minutes of fame"...I don't see that guy talking....maybe it was not as close as the DA is making it out to be....;)

I get that Burris broke the law. My problem is that you know that rapists, child molesters, drug dealers, mob goons, etc can all avoid serious jail time in a state like NY, but Burris is the guy who has to do hard time. When NY state locks up all the dangerous criminals, makes it safe to walk through the Bronx at night, and wipes out the mafia, then they can throw the book at Burris. Otherwise don't patronize me with this tough on crime act because that's all it is, an act!

How are rapists, child molesters and drug dealers "avoiding serious jail time" in NY? That stuff is illegal in NY too. If they are caught they'd get busted too.
